SISTAS: THE MUSICAL Will be Released on DVD

Sistas: The Musical has been performing before enthusiastic and often sold-out audiences, for over a year at St. Luke's Theatre and was recently honored with five nominations from the prestigious Audelco Awards. Now this spirited musical is looking to reach an even broader audience. The play was recently filmed before a live audience for DVD distribution.

Executive producer William Franzblau has been a staunch believer in Sistas' mass appeal. "The story has so many dynamic levels going for it that different audiences will find something to relate to," he says.

Written by Fulbright Scholar Dr. Dorothy Marcic, Sistas centers on an African American family and the five women who come together to clean out their grandmother's attic after her death. The women are also there to pick a song that best honors their grandmother's legacy, to sing that evening at the service celebrating her life and the contributions she made to her family and community. As they go through boxes of their grandmother's possessions, they uncover pieces of her life that trigger memories dating back to the harsh realities of a segregated South, to the fight for civil and women's rights in which she was an active participant.

Sistas incorporates a playlist of more than 30 recognizable songs, beautifully woven into the fabric of the story.

The play has attracted a loyal following, with many audience members returning with groups of family, friends and organizations, starting a tradition more common among moviegoers (repeat audiences).

Sistas was filmed at St. Paul's Community Baptist Church in Brooklyn and is expected to be available on DVD sometime in mid-2013. The project is a production of RLJ Entertainment's One Village Label, one of the top home entertainment brands offering a wide variety of products for African American audiences.

Sistas: The Musical is currently playing at St Luke's Theatre (308 W. 46th St).

Tickets are available online at: Ticket prices $39.50-$69.50.
