Prospect Announces Cast For AMERICAN MORNING Workshop Production

Prospect Theater Company (Melissa Huber, Managing Director / Cara Reichel, Producing Artistic Director) is pleased to announce the cast for its upcoming workshop staging of American Morning, with book, music and lyrics by Timothy Huang, from May 8th through May 19th, 2019.

The Acting Company will feature James Seol (KPOP, Small Mouth Sounds) in the role of Eng, and Hansel Tan (Unlock'd, No-No Boy) in the role of Chin. Other ensemble members include Andew Cristi (A Christmas Story!, Miss You Like Hell), Chil Kong, Daniel Le, Dorcas Leung (Miss Saigon, Hamilton), Aaron Phillips (The Bardy Bunch), and Isabel Santiago (Giant).

The production will be staged in the Mezzanine Theatre at the A.R.T./New York Theatres. The creative team is led by director and choreographer Marlo Hunter, who previously helmed Carner & Gregor's Unlock'd for Prospect, for which she received an SDC Callaway Award.

Reid Thompson is the scenic designer, Annie Le is the costume designer, Adam Honoré is the lighting designer, and Mark Van Hare is the sound designer. Rob Chikar is the production stage manager, and Shea Candelaria is the assistant stage manager. Julianne B. Merrill is the music director.

American Morning is an original musical that examines the modern-day immigrant experience from the point of view of two Chinese immigrant cab drivers in New York City: Chin and Eng share a taxi medallion, a homeland, and the American Dream. While Eng slowly climbs the ladder of success by day, Chin falls short by night, and their partnership spirals towards a single, desperate act. When so much ties the two together, what drives them apart?

American Morning (previously titled Costs of Living) was the recipient of a 2016 Richard Rodgers Award, a 2015 B-Side Theatricals New American Musical Award, and an official selection of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre's Festival of New Works in 2015. It was developed at the New York Theatre Barn, and the 2016 Village Theatre's Festival of New Musicals. The show was a selection of the ASCAP Musical Theater workshop in 2011, as well as the Lehman Engel Musical Theater Workshop's 2012 Master Class, moderated by Stephen Sondheim.

American Morning was inspired by a 2009 New York Times article written by Corey Kilgannon and was later featured in the NYT City Room Blog.
