Photo Coverage: Justice Sonia Sotomayor Surprises GROWING UP GONZALES Cast at Jan Hus Playhouse

The Off-Broadway show Growing Up Gonzales welcomes surprise visitor Justice Sonia Sotomayor to the Jan Hus Playhouse.

The cast knew it was going to be a very different night when the two US Marshals walked in and started to case the joint. The pride of the Bronx, the Hero of many Latinos and Latinas, the woman who went to blows with the GOP and came out on top, the woman who went from the projects to the Supreme Court—was walking down the steps. In the 90 seconds that it took to get to her seat she shared that the last three weeks in Washington were grueling, that her private life had become non-existent since her appointment to the highest court in the land, that she had just had a wonderful dinner up the block, she was ready to be entertained and that at the end of the show "we can take pictures if you like." She took her seat. She was introduced to the audience, stood up and waved to her admirers, then was given what seemed like an hour-long standing ovation. When she sat down there were tears in her eyes.

The show lasted its typical two hours, and by the looks of things Justice Sotomayor was entertained. After the show she greeted the team and took pictures with everyone. She commented on how Growing Up Gonzales star Andres Chulisi Rodriguez was a lot better looking than her colleagues. She told Mr. Rodriguez, "I will be following your career" and she told Felix Rojas, "You have to keep writing for us."

The one-man dramatic comedy about brothers, love, chaos and everything in-between Growing Up Gonzales has been upgraded to an open-ended run after two extensions and will play every Friday and Saturday at 8 pm at The Jan Hus Playhouse, located at 351 E. 74th St., New York, NY.
