New Mixed-Media Play THE CULTURE OF NOW Makes Off Broadway Premiere

New York New Works Theater Festival and Theatre Row proudly present the Off-Broadway premiere of THE CULTURE OF NOW, an epic mixed-media play featuring an international ensemble in a one night only performance September 20 at 8:30 p.m. After the much anticipated sold out opening night at Manhattan's Dixon Place on September 8, this production was added as a special presentation to this year's New York New Works Theatre Festival taking place at Theatre Row's Acorn Theatre.

THE CULTURE OF NOW marks an innovative collaboration between two New York City playwrights. Jess Domain, began her career in Detroit as a dancer and backup singer for Aretha Franklin. She's an ASCAP Songwriter Award recipient currently writing and acting in New York City. Julianne Lavallee hails from Chicago: a poet, playwright, actor, and visual artist. Currently she works as an English and drama teacher in NYC Public Schools. A lack of arts education in our communities created the inspiration behind this play.

Writers Domain and Lavallee explain "Art comes in all shapes, sizes, and colors and this was the motivation behind writing and casting our play blind. We wanted any actor to be able to play any role. Demographics, like boxes, should not limit human beings."

The 2019 federal budget is defunding The National Endowment for The Arts. "This is is an art emergency!" said Lavallee. Domain added, "We want to create awareness of how vital art is to our culture, our communities, our children, and our well being."
