The Vineyard Theatre will present the world premiere of Tarell Alvin McCraney's new play WIG OUT! to kick off its 2008-2009 season in September, it has been announced by Douglas Aibel, The Vineyard's artistic director. Mr. McCraney, recipient of The Vineyard Theatre's first Paula Vogel Playwriting Award in 2007, is the author of THE BROTHERS SIZE, a success at The Public Theatre

Mr. McCraney is a 2007 Yale MFA graduate, whose writing was described by The New York Times as, "the thrilling sound that is one of the main reasons we go to the theatre, the beautiful music of a new voice."  Variety said: "Tarell Alvin McCraney continues to fulfill his promise as an original new voice in the American theater."

WIG OUT! is the story of two competing "houses" of drag queens, and the loyalties and dreams which pull their members together and apart.  The play is a deeply human and moving story set in a world that is larger-than-life.

The Vineyard's production will be directed by Tina Landau (Vineyard's Mary Rose), who received rave reviews for her direction of Mr. McCraney's IN THE RED AND BROWN WATER at Atlanta's ALLIANCE THEATRE this past spring.  Variety called that production "simply spellbinding."

WIG OUT! will begin previews in mid-September 2008 at The Vineyard with an early October opening.

WIG OUT! will be followed by the New York premiere of The Civilians' new work THIS BEAUTIFUL CITY in early 2009 at The Vineyard Theatre.

The Vineyard begins performances this week on Wednesday, April 9, prior to an April 17 opening, of Jenny Schwartz's play GOD'S EAR.
