Gloria Deluxe is a musical group fronted by Cynthia Hopkins: a versatile composer, graceful lyricist, and accomplished performer on piano, accordion, guitar, saw, and of course, vocals. Wrapped in a weary, country twang with a raspy undertone, Hopkins's delicate yet emotionally forceful voice has been compared to a wide range of vocalists including Billie Holiday, Natalie Merchant, and Lotte Lenya; her lyrics evoking dark humor and sparkling intelligence in equal measure. Hopkins is backed by Gloria Deluxe, her genre-spanning, elastic band. As timeless as it is immediately engaging, the unique sound of Gloria Deluxe "hones in on a smokey troubadour hiss with a carnival twist" (CD Baby). Creeping from dark country noir to wasted whiskey-toned folk to torch songs from a forgotten cabaret, the music of Gloria Deluxe sweeps the listener along on a journey from hope and exhilaration, through heart-ache and despair, to redemption and grace and back again. $15
