Envelope Ensemble Presents ELECTRA, 9/20-22

By:

Envelope Ensemble has just announced its first production: Adrienne Kennedy's adaptation of Euripides' Electra.

Electra is the story of a young woman and her long lost brother, Orestes, who decide to exact revenge upon their mother's lover and, against better judgment, their mother. Such a decision was made under the impression that the gods willed it so. The dilemma grapples with morality itself: does the gods' desire for something make it inherently good?

Envelope Ensemble's production draws inspiration from contemporary Greece, where many artists are underfunded and forced to find new and exciting ways to produce theatre in a low-cost manner. Electra will take place in Billy's Backyard in Bushwick; it will fully utilize the dilapidated space. The price of admission to Electra is an offering of any kind to the god Apollo. (Suggestions include but are not limited to: fruit, meat, cash, wine, art, candles, or a personal item.) Guests are encouraged to arrive early to properly offer their sacrifice.

Electra runs September 20th-21st at 10:00p.m. and September 22nd at 8:30p.m. at Billy's Backyard, 190 Jefferson St. Admission will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis (though the quality of one's gift may influence the admission gods). A festival, hosted by DJ Tyger James, will be held after the show, where such sacrifices will be consumed by the audience and actors alike.

Electra is produced by Charles Quittner and directed by Ariel Kline, with music by Ryan Camenzuli, costumes and makeup by Rita Mae Sylvester, lighting by John Erich De La Torre, and ancient Greek translated and coached by Carrie-Ann Biondi. All graphics are designed by Jenny Irving. The cast includes: Sarah Cline, Tim Torres, Pooya Mohseni, John Bateman, Schuyler Mastain, Abby Judd, Nyssa Duchow, Maggie Herskowitz, Jasmin Levin, Christine Bermúdez, John Erich De La Torre, Tyler Sunderland, and Rita Mae Sylvester.
