Dixon Place Presents ANNETTE, Begins Today

By: Mar. 12, 2010

On March 12th at 7:30pm, the Dixon Place proudly presents the world premiere of Annette, a Dixon Place Mondo Cane Commission choreographed by Regina Nejman. This multi-dimensional piece will run for three weeks Friday and Saturday only beginning on March 12.

The acclaimed Mondo Cane series allows Dixon Place to support artists by providing them with 1-3 months of workshop time, plus a month-long run of performances where they can get audience feedback and continue the work's development. Each year, six to seven artists or groups are commissioned for this series, more than half of whom represent minority perspectives. Artists invited to submit for commission are usually those with whom Dixon Place has established an existing relationship through previous work in a series or the performance works-in-progress.

Inspired by Nejman's own experiences teaching in a psychiatric outpatient program, the work follows Annette and Oliver, two fragmented characters, as they struggle for survival and understanding in this multi-media dance piece. Methodical and meditative movements combined with a deconstructed soundscape will fill the stage creating a dream-like environment and a search for balance accented throughout by a sense of humor.

ABOUT THE CHOREOGRAPHER

From Rio de Janeiro, and based in NYC, Regina Nejman has been creating her own choreography since 1993. She has been presented at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, Joyce SoHo, Symphony Space, New York International Fringe Festival, DNA, DTW's Fresh Tracks, Merce Cunningham Studio, DP and more. She has received support from The Greenwall Foundation, Puffin Foundation, LMCC/ MCAF; Meet the Composer, MFTA, space grants from 92nd St Y, Queens Museum of Art, Abrons Arts Center, as well as commissions from Princeton University, The Yard and NJCU.

ABOUT DIXON PLACE

Dixon Place is a non-profit organization founded in 1986 to provide a space for literary and performing artists to create and develop new works in front of a live audience. While other venues of its kind have since died off, or now only present established artists, Dixon Place remains at the heart of the New York experimental performance scene. Taking risks is crucial to the life of Dixon Place, its artists and audiences.

Dixon Place's primary commitments are to bring artists and audiences together through live
performance in order to expand the understanding of the creative process and its final product, and to provide a supportive environment for emerging artists to present new work. Over the last sixteen years, Dixon Place has successfully maintained its intimate atmosphere and unique environment while increasing its programming to fulfill the need for performance opportunities for the New York
community of performing and literary artists.
