Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts Presents ODYSSEUS DOA, 3/16-20

By:

The Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts, in co-production with Red House Arts Center, will present a limited engagement off-Broadway run of Stephen Svoboda's audaciously comedic look at death in the age of AIDS, ODYSSEUS DOA (died of AIDS), March 16 - 20 at the Lion Theatre at Theatre Row (410 West 42nd St.).

Elliot has come to the hospital to die. Amongst a group of patients with advanced AIDS, his mind deteriorates, leaving fantasy and anxiety to tango. His magical and humorous story is blended with Homer's "Odyssey," the story of a man determined to return home despite all the obstacles the gods dish out along the way. Elliot has become the legendary Greek hero Odysseus.

The cast of ODYSSEUS DOA includes Laura Austin, John Bixler, Binaifer Dabu, Brett Davenport, Maha McCain, Kate Metroka, Adam Perabo, Darian Sundberg, Temar Underwood and Nathan Young.

Set Design is by Michiko Kitayama-Skinner, Lighting is by John Czajkowki, Sound by Stephen Svoboda, costumes are by Kristi McKay, Technical Director is John Czajkowski and props are by Kristian Rodriguez.

ODYSSEUS DOA debuted as a hit at the 2004 New York International Fringe Festival, where it won an award for Best Ensemble. Subsequent productions have been staged in Long Island, NY and internationally in Athens, Greece and Seoul, South Korea. The most recent production opened in Syracuse at the Red House Arts Center and ran during January 2011.

Stephen Svoboda (Writer and Director) is currently the Executive Artistic Director for The Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts in Blue Mountain Lake and the Red House Arts Center in Syracuse. Previously he served as a professor in the Theatre Arts Department at the University of Miami where he was the Head of the B.F.A. program in Directing and Playwriting and the Artistic Director of Miami's Fresco Productions. Odysseus Died of AIDS was published in the anthology Plays and Playwrights 2005, by the New York Theatre Experience. His most recent production, Reconstructing Mama, a new musical written with N. David Williams, premiered Off-Broadway at The Theatre Row Studios in August 2006. He works internationally with The Harambe Project to help do HIV/AIDS education and prevention and orphan care throughout Africa.

Performances of ODYSSEUS DOA are on 3/16, 3/17, 3/18, 3/19 at 8PM. There are matinee performances on 3/19 and 3/20 at 2PM.
