The Mabel Mercer Foundation was established 1985 as a not-for-profit arts organization. The Foundation serves to both perpetuate the memory and spirit of its legendary namesake and to stimulate and promote public interest in the fragile and endangered world of cabaret. The Foundation is currently under the direction of Donald F. Smith.

The first annual Cabaret Convention was mounted in 1989. Since then, other conventions have been produced in Chicago, Palm Springs, Los Angeles and Philadelphia.
