TITLE Casting all Roles for New Afro-Latino/Latina American Musical DESCRIPTION Casting all roles for the Workshop and Presentation Series of the new musical Ybora City with book by Anita Gonzalez and music by Dan Furman. Directed by Sara Rademacher. Set in Tampa Florida in 1918, the musical based on true events follows an American community struggling to unite against an abusive factory owner and collectively form a multi-racial union. When Rafael comes to town to read newspapers for the factory workers, he falls for Teresa, the sister of union organizer Catalino. Romance blossoms, tensions rise, and when Catalino stands up for worker rights, violence erupts. Auditions: December 17th, 10am - 3pm by appointment Callbacks: December 19th, 4pm - 7pm Music Rehearsal: Saturday January 20th, 12pm - 4pm Full Cast Read Through: Sunday January 21st, 12pm-4pm Workshop and Presentations at Punto Space, 325 West 38th Street: January 12th, 3pm -8pm January 20th, 3pm - 8pm February 5th, 3pm - 8pm February 12th, 3pm - 8pm This is an opportunity to work intimately with the production team to develop the play and present the work as it progresses over the four workshop dates. Casting the following roles: Rafael Jimenez: Tenor, 28 year-old charismatic cigar roller, self-possessed and multi-lingual. Light skinned Latino male. Catalino Sanchez: Baritone, 25 year old idealist who believes that worker’s rights matter. Light skinned Cuban male. Pedro Fernandez: Baritone, 50 year old male Afro-Cuban cigar roller, a survivor in a changing city. Dark-skinned Cuban male. Señor Roman Fuente: Baritone, Part Italian, part Spanish, 60 year old male owner of the Fuente Factory/Comic. Alejandro Lado: Baritone, 35 year old Cuba male foreman at the factory. the enforcer and keeper of the peace. Estevan: Baritone, 25 Afro-Latino male friend of Pedro. Gomez: Baritone, Cautious Cuban worker wants to see change. Fermin: Baritone, Hot headed Cuban worker with a strong stake in improving worker’s lives. Diego: Tenor, Cuban worker who believes in the union. Oscar: Baritone, Italian worker who is very afraid of losing his job. Teresa Sanchez: MezzoSoprano: Cuban female – 21 year old tobacco stripper who dreams of the stage an d seeing the world. Irina Fernandez: MezzoSoprano: Afro Caribbean female – 45 year old Afro-Caribbean woman dedicated to Pedro. Luisa: MezzoSoprano: 25 year old childhood friend of Teresa who wants to be a part of change. Clara: Soprano: Oscar’s Italian wife who works as a cigar worker stripping leaves. Production History YBOR CITY began with a photograph, an image Anita Gonzalez found on her father’s dresser of three men seated in wicker chairs. This image was her grandfather, Pedro Paulo Gonzalez, an Afro-Cuban cigar roller with his compadres. After researching in archives, and presenting about the Tampa tabaqueros at Williams College and Performance Studies International, Gonzalez wrote the first draft of what would become YBOR CITY at the Rockefeller Foundation residency center in Bellagio, Italy in 2003. This first draft, called “Cigar Memories,” was presented by The The musical has enjoyed a staged reading at Dixon Place in Fall 2003, a staged reading at the Strasberg Institute under the direction of Lorca Peress, anda full workshop staging directed by John Seibert and choreographed by Ron De Jesus at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 2017.
