UNTITLED IMMERSIVE FRANKENSTEIN PROJECT - Old Sturbridge Village Non Equity Auditions

Casting a yet-to-be-titled, movement-based immersive theatrical project based on Mary Shelley’s prophetic 1818 novel about the dangers of unchecked ambition and the brutality of isolation— “Frankenstein; or The Modern Prometheus,” set in a rural mid 19th Century Village. Presented this Halloween season by ClockJack Productions in association with American Circus Theatre sr Old Sturbridge Village in Sturbridge, Massachusetts. Directed by P.J. Griffith and choreographed by Ashlee Montague & Richard Hankes.

Seeking a company of unique artists from a wide variety of backgrounds/training with strong sense of physical-storytelling; from Contemporary Dance to Le Coq to Hip Hop to Contact Improv to Burlesque to Capoeira to Ballet to Pina Bausch to Viewpoints, and every color in between. There is no speaking and artists must be comfortable performing outside in October in Massachusetts in dimly lit village.

We are looking for interesting characters with bold movement vocabularies that can hold a bewildered audience’s attention in the middle of the night in an eerie village full dark secrets.

There is no need to tape for a specific character, just do something interesting for 3 minutes to one of the tracks provided in the link. That being said, here are the characters in the experience to get a sense of tone. We look forward to seeing your 3 minutes of Truth!

CHARACTERS

Victor— An obsessed scientist with a vivid imagination whose ambition to conquer death leads to his own descent into madness. He has faith in reason, but his guilt, despair, and pride lead to his tragic emotional unraveling. He trades his studies in alchemy and the occult for chemistry and biology. He is haunted by the death of his mother, then later feels directly responsible for the death of everyone he cares about at the hands of his own creation. Victor craves Elizabeth’s attention from a young age after his parents took her in, but obsession and fear leave him ill,

paranoid, melancholy (and often hallucinating), isolated by his own secrets. Under 6 feet tall.

The Creature— Victor’s cherished and feared creation, made of exhumed body parts and organs harvested from local dead criminals, given the “spark of life” through electricity from harnessed lightning. A large and extraordinarily strong

being who starts off innocent and curious, longing for love and belonging, and becomes monstrous through rejection and suffering. Almost human, but denied empathy by society. Obsessed with the idea of having a female partner, he becomes vicious and wrathful after he decides he has nothing to lose. The Creature is determined to kill everything his creator loves to forever destroy his happiness. Over 6 feet tall.

Elizabeth— Victor’s adopted cousin, turned recent fiancé. She is a beacon of love, moral clarity, and optimism, even when Victor cannot recognize it. She is lonely and passionate about social justice, always seeing the best in people, even in their darkest hour. She is not aware of Victor’s experiments attempting to create life or the vengeful creature that has been pursuing him around the world. Her tragic fate underscores the consequences of Victor’s neglect and arrogance.

Commodore Walton— An eccentric, lonely explorer, once-consumed by ambition. He recently returned from the Arctic. He is both fascinated by Victor and afraid of what his pursuits may bring humanity. Bored with a conventional life in England and craving adventure, Walton took to the seas toward The North Pole to find “The Secret of Magnetism”. He gets more than he ever bargained for, having to do many desperate things to survive in the Arctic, trapped in the ice. We question his credibility and sanity since his return. Always looking for a friend or an audience.

Justine— Elizabeth’s beautiful young servant and confidant who has a secret past with Victor’s father, Alphonse. Seemingly devoutly religious, she conceals many hidden truths about the Frankenstein family, whom she has lived at the mercy of for a decade after losing her own family to disease. She recently began dabbling in witchcraft to deal with her problems. She is accused of murdering Alphonse’s beloved son/Victor’s precious baby brother William in cold blood in the middle of the night and confesses to the crime under pressure.

Henry— Victor’s loyal childhood friend and current benefactor. Henry is athletic adventurous, ambitious, morally upstanding, and a hopeless romantic. His optimism is a stark contrast to Victor— if Victor is driven by reason and science, Henry is driven by passion and beauty. His unexpected murder by The Creature is a painful moral reckoning for Victor that drives him toward madness.

Agatha— The young and beautiful daughter of the DeLacey family, observed by the Creature on their farm, at first from afar, and then up close. A model of compassion from whom The Creature learns tenderness, music, and empathy, becoming bitter and violent when her affection is denied to him when she screams after he tries to connect with her, driving him into a state of wrathful rage. Perhaps she plays the violin or has some other unexpected talent.
