Characters

Robert Shaw (Stage Age – mid to late 40s)

Shaw as a seasoned, sometimes volatile actor, struggling with the demands of the production and his own personal demons. He is a complex character with a sharp wit, a strong desire to write, a propensity for pub games, and a tendency towards drinking as much as breathing.

Roy Scheider (Stage Age - late 30s, early 40s)
Scheider is the more grounded, logical, and pragmatic actor of the three, trying to navigate (and sometimes flat-out referee) the tensions between Shaw and Dreyfuss. He acts as a mediator and attempts to keep the peace amidst the chaos. He loves to read, talk about the most mundane information, smoke, and sunbathe (actor may be asked to spray tan, at the production’s expense.)

Richard Dreyfuss (Stage Age - late 20s)
Dreyfuss as the youngest and perhaps most idealistic of the three actors, facing challenges with the technical aspects of filming and the conflicts between his older co-stars. He is energized, uncomfortable in his own skin, ambitious and somewhat naive.

Please note – During SIB, actors may be asked to wear beards and wigs to match the look of the actors on set during the 1974 production of Jaws.

ABOUT THE SHOW

“It’s not the time it takes to take the take that takes the time. It’s the time it takes between the takes that takes the time to take the take.”

LIGHTS UP on The Orca, drifting along on the open sea off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, 1974. The shooting of Steven Spielberg’s Jaws has completely stalled and the film’s lead actors, Robert Shaw, Roy Scheider and Richard Dreyfuss, are stuck on a boat, at the mercy of unpredictable weather and a faulty mechanical co-star name-a Bruce. Overflowing with alcohol and ambition, three hammered sharks start to bare their teeth.

The Shark Is Broken in this comedic, behind-the-scenes love letter to the imperfect actors involved in the making an unforeseen classic, and to filmmaking in general. “You’re gonna need a bigger boat!”
