RAGTIME - The Noel S. Ruiz Theatre

The Noel S. Ruiz Theatre at CM Performing Arts Center will be holding Auditions for RAGTIME THE MUSICAL on Monday December 4th and Tuesday December 5th at 8PM.

Please prepare 16-32 bars (30-45 seconds of music) from the show or in the style of the show. Please be prepared to dance following the vocal audition.

Rehearsal period Dec 14-Feb 23. Please bring conflicts.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
The roles of COALHOUSE WALKER JR and SARAH have already been cast. All other roles are open.

MOTHER (Female, Caucasian) - graceful and gracious on the surface, a product of the American upper class; inside, however, there is spirit, compassion, intelligence, and fierce independence; the Accidental Feminist; also has a wonderful, playful relationship with her son and is always amused by him; maintains a proper and dutiful relationship with her husband and discovers her own sexuality as the play progresses; voice: beautiful soprano with a strong belt (to C#); low G-high F# (optional High B).

TATEH (Male, Caucasian) - a dynamic, sexy leading character man; a Jewish immigrant, Tateh challenges his old life and seeks a better one for his daughter; even when it seems he is beaten by society, his innate strength and humor lift him up; warm, funny, filled with life and passion; tenacious, a survivor and a very clever man; voice: baritone with good high notes; low A-high F#.

FATHER (Male, Caucasian) - a salesman; a good, proud, upstanding citizen; represents the traditional views held by many turn-of-the-century Americans; after his return from his trip to the Arctic, he feels alienated from his family and his environment; he is baffled and befuddled by the new world; voice: baritone with good high notes; low A-high F#.

YOUNGER BROTHER (Male, Caucasian) - idealistic and difficult, he searches for a sense of self; obsessed with Evelyn Nesbit, he becomes embittered and depressed and soon becomes a Young Revolutionary and joins The Coalhouse Gang to fight injustice; voice: strong tenor; low B-high G#.

GRANDFATHER (Male, Caucasian) - a feisty, upper-class old gentleman who holds on to the old ways; baritone.

THE LITTLE BOY (Boy, Caucasian) - precocious, intelligent, observant, and curious, he is constantly learning about the world around him; he is prescient--seems to know things before they happen; must have excellent diction; voice: not yet changed; middle C up to D (full voice); 5’ or less.

THE LITTLE GIRL (Girl, Caucasian) - appealing, fragile, earnest; a Jewish immigrant with her father, Tateh; voice: middle C up to C#; 5’ or less

EVELYN NESBIT (Female, Caucasian) - pretty, sexy, and self-aware; she needs to be truly funny; the iconic symbol of sex and beauty at the turn of the century; soprano.

HARRY HOUDINI (Male, Caucasian) - a magician and performer; a sly sense of danger, sex, and charisma; must have a great, muscular physique; gymnastics and/or aerial work a plus; an immigrant raised in the Midwest; baritone.

EMMA GOLDMAN (Female, Caucasian) - an anarchist and social activist; earthy, warm, ironic, full-voiced; a rabble-rouser; huge Broadway belt to an A; alto.

WILLIE CONKLIN (Male, Caucasian) - Fire Chief Conklin acts hostilely toward Coalhouse and is ultimately forced out of New Rochelle; must have a sweet face with a certain amount of joviality and humor, with the menace simmering underneath; baritone. Will double in the Ensemble.

BOOKER T. WASHINGTON (Male, African American) - a well-educated Black orator and leader who preaches friendship and cooperation between Whites and Blacks as essential to the success of Blacks in America; baritone. Will double in the Ensemble.

SARAH'S FRIEND (Female, African American) - a warm, soulful singer/actress who plaintively and ferociously leads the Harlem Ensemble during Sarah’s funeral; she then becomes a domestic to the New Rochelle family. Will double in the Ensemble.

HENRY FORD (Male, Caucasian) - an inventor; lanky, folksy, full of himself; there’s an edge underneath the public smile; tenor. Will double in the Ensemble.

JP MORGAN (Male, Caucasian) - an incredibly wealthy financier; portly, pompous, blustering; baritone. Will double in the Ensemble.


ENSEMBLE (Male and Female, All Ethnicities) - well-trained male and female legit voices that blend beautifully; sopranos and first tenors to high B; one Harlem soprano to high C; altos need strong belts and at least a high F#; baritones need a rich, warm sound and a high F#; all must dance and/or move extremely well and must be strong character actors; featured roles include historical characters such as Harry K. Thaw, Stanford White, William Howard Taft, D.A. Charles Whitman, and other domestics, firemen, Ford workers, policemen, vacationers, protestors, bathing beauties, reporters, etc.
