SHOW SYNOPSIS:

One of the world’s most iconic and longest-running musicals, Les Misérables tells the story of Jean Valjean, a former convict who spends a lifetime seeking redemption. Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France and the aftermath of the French Revolution, this timeless story of intertwined destinies reveals the power of compassion and the quiet evil of indifference to human suffering. As Valjean’s quest for a new life carries him into Paris and to the barricades of the Student Revolution, he is hunted by Inspector Javert and the ghosts of his past. Amidst a battle for the soul of Paris, he discovers the true meaning of love and salvation. Performed in over 40 countries and 22 languages, and with a lush, swelling score that features such famed songs as “I Dreamed a Dream,” “On My Own,” and “Bring Him Home,” Les Mis brings Victor Hugo’s revolutionary novel blazingly to life.

Jean Valjean: Male, all ethnicities/race, 35-49 (Range: G#2-B4)

Sings to B, high lyrics baritone or tenor, with both strong low notes and a strong falsetto. A poor peasant who rises to affluence, he has great natural nobility and dignity. A powerful figure, with a character of operatic size and passion.

Fantine: Female, all ethnicities/race, 20-30 (Range: D3-E5)

Poor but beautiful and elegant factory girl, struggling to support her fatherless daughter. Later is a pauper, a prostitute, a consumptive and a ghost. Earthy and poignant. Although she is finally defeated by circumstances, she should appear to be strong and a survivor. She puts up a valiant fight against the horrors of her life.

Javert: Male, all ethnicities/race, 35-49 (Range: F2/F#4)

Baritone, sings to G. Must have a natural gravitas with ability to be expressive and dynamic. Policemen who relentlessly hunts Valjean. An imposing character. The ultimate ‘law and order’ figure. Obsessed, to the point of irrationality, with rigid and merciless moral code.

Cosette: Female, all ethnicities/race, 18-25 (Range: Bb3-C6)

Fantine’s daughter (first seen as and played by a child) delicate, elegant, vulnerable and beautiful. Falls in love with and later marries Marius

Eponine: Female, all ethnicities/race, 18-25 (Range: F3-F5)

Daughter of the Thénardiers but in no way behaves like them. Fired by an unrequited love for Marius. Gamine. Hasn’t learned to disguise her emotions; wears her heart on her sleeve.

Marius: Male, all ethnicities/race, 18-25 (Range: Bb2-Ab4)

Member of the revolutionary student movement. Attractive and romantic but in a sensitive, 19th century ‘Byronic’ way.

Thenardier: Male, all ethnicities/race, 35-49 (Range: C3-G4)

Strong comic character role. A crooked innkeeper, later a petty, amoral thief. Greedy, irrerent, selfish, boorish, vulgar.

Madame Thenardier: Female, all ethnicities/race, 30-49 (Range: G#3-D5)

Tough, sharp, coarse, boorish, vulgar. Strong character comedienne role.

Enjolras: Male, all ethnicities/race, 20-29 (Range: A2-G#4)

Very strong singer. Handsome, charismatic political figure, leader of the revolutionary movement.

Ensemble: All Genders, all ethnicities/race
