About the Show:
It’s the opening night of The Golden Egg on Broadway, and the wealthy producer is throwing a lavish party in her equally lavish Manhattan townhouse. Downstairs the celebrities are pouring in, but the real action is upstairs in the bedroom, where a group of insiders have staked themselves out to await the reviews. The group includes the excitable playwright; the possibly unstable wunderkind director; the pill-popping leading lady who is treading the boards after becoming infamous in Hollywood, and the playwright’s best friend, for whom the play was written but who passed up this production for a television series. Add to this a drama critic who’s panned the playwright in the past and a new-in-town aspiring singer, and you have a prime recipe for the narcissism, ambition, childishness, and just plain irrationality that infuse the theatre - for comedy. But don’t worry: this play is sure to be the hit they have all been hoping for.
Character Breakdown:
Gus P. Head
Male Identifying, early-late 20’s
Enthusiastic coat check attendant, polite, naive, starry-eyed, innocent farm boy trying to catch his big break, an earnest singer (doesn’t have to be pretty singing, but must be comfortable carrying a tune), Southern/Texas accent
James Wicker
Male Identifying, 30s-50’s
Insecure, egotistical, an actor whose 9-year TV series did not allow him time to be in his friend Peter’s play “The Golden Egg”. The play’s main character (rarely, if ever, leaves the stage)
Peter Austin
Male Identifying, 30s-50’s
The playwright, anxious, currently facing a career-defining moment, desperate for a hit, wants to be a Broadway legend
Sir Frank Finger
Male Identifying, 25-40’s
The director, flashy, pretentious, self-proclaimed “genius”, has a reputation for making avant-garde choices, desperately looking for his first “flop”, British accent
Ira Drew
Male Identifying, 50+
The critic, loathsome, blistering, known for searing reviews, he secretly wants to pen his own plays
Virginia Noyes
Female Identifying, 50+
The star. Has a reputation/infamous for her heavy drinking and drug use. Left the silver screen to return to Broadway. Talented but troubled
Julia Budder
Female Identifying, 50+
The producer. Elegant, stately, wealthy and generous, hopeful yet naive. Often misquotes famous lines.
