Full of humor, warmth, insight and wisdom, Dinner With Friends, written by Donald Margulies, is a funny yet bittersweet examination of the married lives of two couples who have been extremely close for 12 years. Winner of the 2000 Pulitzer Prize. A happily married couple discover their close friends are not as happy as they thought, and begin to wonder how sound their own relationship can be. Gabe and Karen are a pair of wedded food writers who more than a decade ago introduced Tom and Beth. Tom and Beth fell in love and got married, but one night as Gabe and Karen are making dinner, they receive startling news from Beth - Tom has left her and the two are filing for divorce.

Margulies keeps changing the persepective to show how one couple's breakup can have an equally devastating effect on another's stability. Donald Magulies has said that like his other works, he wrote Dinner With Friends "to relect observations I'm having at that time in my life...all around us, relationships are changing...it's those notion's of impermanence, the yearning for something else that I'm tapping into." Dinner With Friends has touched audiences around the world for simple reasons: the characters are real. They are normal. They are the people we know and they are people facing their fears; they are exactly like us. The play begins in present day over a luxurious Italian dinner, takes us back in time to newer days of infatuation, and then returns to the present, all while exploring the varying tones of the relationships of the two couples.
