Characters

(All 3 present ages of late 30s to early 40s)

Marc: An engineer and self-proclaimed intellectual and
aesthete, Marc is pompous but somewhat contradictorily,
has some trouble with understanding modern art. Marc is
egotistic, but also codependent, and as the play progresses,
he shows character elements of cruelty and betrayal. He has
definite passionate opinions on the nature of art and its
meaning.

Serge: A dermatologist who has relied on Marc and Yvan
to provide him with company and friendship. Serge himself
seems privately unsure about the painting, but once Marc
begins his critics of it Serge finds himself doing everything
he can to defend his extravagant purchase.

Yvan: The meekest of the trio, Yvan works at a stationery
store. He comes into the argument as a kind of referee
when Marc, having become upset by Serge’s buying the
painting, asks him to confirm how ridiculous and offensive
it is. Yvan, though, is also moved by the painting and even
agrees with Serge’s assessment of it. He is then caught
between his friends who are much more driven by their
egos.
