Arsenic and Old Lace by Joseph Kesselring is a dark comedy about Mortimer Brewster, a drama critic who discovers that his sweet, elderly aunts have been poisoning lonely old men and burying them in the basement. As he tries to deal with his eccentric family—including a brother who believes he's Teddy Roosevelt and another who's a dangerous criminal—hilarious chaos ensues. Filled with witty dialogue, mistaken identities, and macabre humor.

Character Descriptions

Abby: 60-70 year old woman. Very hospitable and welcoming. Very chipper at the most inappropriate times. Think Grandma Addams from The Addams Family.

Martha: 50-60 year old woman. Poised and elegant. Still holds her magnetism from her early days. Also gets excited by the macabre at times. Think Morticia from The Addams Family.

Mortimer: mid 20's - late 30's man. Very put together, intelligent man. airs on the side of neurotic but means well at all times. Clearly is smitten by Elaine but we mostly see him in a state where he's paranoid about loosing his mind amongst other things. Comedic timing is a must especially with the physical humor and exaggerated facial expressions.

Elaine: early 20's to late 30's woman. Humble and mild mannered with an understated fiery side. Easily flustered and riled up when Mortimer flat out denies her advances, however is able top keep an air of naivety throughout. Overall a very endearing nature.

Teddy: Mid 30's to late 40's man. High energy, eccentric, erratic and deliberate in everything he does. Has an air of unpredictability in every moment. (Actors able to do a spot on President Teddy Roosevelt impression is a huge plus).

Johnathan: Mid 30's to early 50's man. Big, ominous and highly intimidating. Has an immature, petty nature masquerading in masculine bravado backed by murderous intent.

Dr. Einstein: Mid 30's man or woman. German accent is a must. A lush, pacifist and total pushover to Johnathan's will. On the surface very pleasant but there must be something sinister underneath to be willing to follow a serial killer all over the world. Good comic timing and physical comedy needed.

Officer Brophy: Mid 30's man. Meek, neighborly and good natured. Think Laurel from the Laurel and Hardy show.

Officer Kline: mid 40's to 50 man. Jaded veteran cop but also good natured. Walks with a limp. Think Hardy to Officer Brophy's Laurel (Laurel and Hardy show).

Officer O'Hara: mid 30's to late 40's man. On the surface seems like a man about their work but is quickly distracted and very eccentric when it comes to his passion. Unaware of reading the room once he gets started on a jag. Think Officer Claw Hauser from the movie Zootopia.

Dr. Harper: late 50's to early 60's man.Elaine's father. Polished, diplomatic, dogmatic and very suspicious of Mortimer's intentions with his daughter. Very pleasant overall but is distrustful of anything ungodly. Think the father from 7th Heaven.

Mr. Gibbs: late 60's+ man. Hobo-esque man with class. No nonsense.

Lt. Rooney: 50's man. A no nonsense ball buster. Leader of this neighborhood's police force. Think if Ralph Camden is always ticked off by Norton and then comes to work. Here to kick ass and take names.

Mr. Witherspoon: late 60's+ man. Demur and soft spoken but very professional.
