Dancing Through the Darkest Night

Marigny Opera Ballet’s WINTERLIGHT Opens its 12th Season

Following its tradition of offering original winter holiday ballets, the Marigny Opera Ballet announced the premiere of a dramatic and joyful full-length work celebrating the winter solstice. Opening December 5th, 2025 at the Marigny Opera House, WINTERLIGHT is a journey through the longest night of the year to the rising of the sun, a celebration of a world restored. The two-act contemporary ballet is being created for the company’s eight dancers by internationally acclaimed choreographer Christian Denice. The music, performed live by New Orleans’ Delachaise Quartet, is a special collection of Nordic folk music arranged by the Danish String Quartet.

“This is certainly not another Nutcracker,” says Executive Director Dave Hurlbert. “It’s not a Victorian party; it’s an intimate experience. It’s people clinging to their hopes and finding love at the end, with the rising of the winter sun.”
