Jaffrey Gets Into the Spooky Season with Screening of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD

After graduating from Carnegie Mellon University in the early 1960s, George A. Romero got in the film business by making commercials and industrial films in the Pittsburgh area. But his first paid film job came from Fred Rogers, AKA "Mister Rogers", filming segments for his pre-Mister Rogers' Neighborhood children's programs on public television station WQED. From those innocent days rose a man who would co-write and direct one of the most acclaimed horror films in history, Night of The Living Dead. The classic film, presented in high definition, comes to Jaffrey's River Street Theatre this Saturday, October 27th at 7pm. The film is screened as a prelude to Halloween night and all tickets are just $5.00.

Night of The Living Dead premiered at the Fulton Theatre in Pittsburgh on October 1, 1968, to a standing ovation. Of course, most of the audience was in the film because it was shot in and around the Pittsburgh area and used over 200 extras.

The film has much to boast about. Night of The Living Dead originated the idea (now taken for granted) that zombies are cannibals. The film cost only $114,000 to make, but it has grossed over $200 million (in 2017 dollars). It stands as one of the most successful independent movies ever made. It was also one of the first films added to the permanent film collection at the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.

Multiple successful sequels were made by Romero including Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Land of the Dead and Survival of the Dead. Romero also directed Creepshow, Monkey Shines, and Knightriders. Romero passed away in 2017 but left an inspiring legacy of film for future horror filmmakers.

Tickets for Night of the Living Dead are $5.00 and advance purchases are recommended.
