Street Theatre Company Presents HAIRSPRAY, 3/25-4/6

Loveable plus-size heroine Tracy Turnblad has a passion for dancing, and wins a spot on the local TV dance program. Overnight she finds herself transformed from outsider to teen celebrity. Can a larger-than-life adolescent manage to vanquish the program's reigning princess, integrate the television show, and find true love (singing and dancing all the while, of course!) without mussing her hair? HAIRSPRAY delights audiences by sweeping them away to 1960's Baltimore, where the 50's are out -- and change is in the air.

"Hairspray is a perfect fit for STC," explains Artistic Director, Cathy Street. "The themes in the show are so important; body issues, desegregation, fitting in-it's all in there and it is all wrapped in a bright package." Adds director Jon Royal, "I'm excited about directing this show because I see it as a young woman's fantasy about social change and difference. The harsher truths of our world couched in camp provide fun and useful questions for our culture as we continue to move forward."

The run features special events including a charity night, where one dollar of each ticket sold will go to a local non-profit, a student night where tickets are only $10, a Starving Artist night that is pay-what-you-can-afford, and a "talk-back" night, where the audience is invited to stay after the show and talk with the cast and crew. The performance stars Tonya Pewitt as the loveable Tracy and Michael Holder as heartthrob Link, along with over 30 other local favorite performers. Performances are March 25-April 16, with performances Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m., and Sundays at 5 p.m. Tickets are $16 and $14 and are available online at www.streettheatrecompany.org.
