Following the success of their past original productions, the Segal Centre for Performing Arts is proud to present the World Premiere of a new Canadian musical inspired by the incredible, true story of Marc Hall, the Ontario teenager who took his Catholic School Board to court when they refused to let him attend prom with his boyfriend. A refreshingly fun and heartfelt story about a community coming together and being true to yourself, Prom Queen: The Musical will premiere at the Segal from October 27 to November 20, 2016.

The location is Tinsel Texas where a parade of "nuttier- than- a- fruitcake" guests descends upon the Snowlake Inn. The harried innkeeper Trina has her hands full with Mrs. Claus and one of Santa's elves on a romantic rendezvous; two feisty feuding aunts; 2 bombastic actors on a secret mission; and, a last minute wedding with the Futrelle family. There are 4 sitcom type skits which have been said to be more fun than a ride on a one horse open sleigh.

Running from October 4 to 30, 2016, this quirky tale of two people finding love in multi-universes, which made waves on both sides of the Atlantic in London's West End (2012) and on Broadway (2015), is directed by the accomplished Canadian director, former Artistic Director of the NAC English Theatre and recent META nominee, Peter Hinton.

This 2016-2017 season, eight professional theatre companies at the core of the local indie scene, satisfy a vast range of tastes and interests with stories that stimulate imagination, understanding, discussion and change. English-speaking audiences can become acquainted with French playwrights or young students can take their first step in a life-long appreciation of theatre. Homegrown plays, lauded nationally and abroad, are presented by some companies while others play cultural ambassadors and tour their offerings inside and outside the province. Fact-based productions bring Canadian history to vivid life or delve into stories of other countries and cultures. Theatre-goers will experience characters' challenges and triumphs, embark on spiritual, emotional and historical journeys, see life through the eyes of the disenfranchised and the persecuted, or explore issues of sexuality, freedom, and power. An alphabetical list, by company, follows.

The adaptation of Chaim Potok's 1972 novel follows the story of a young Jewish man whose artistic talent separates him from his traditional family and threatens his relationship with community and faith. My Name is Asher Lev runs from Sept. 11 to Oct. 2 with tickets starting at $45.
