Penobscot Theatre Company Launches 42nd Season with RING OF FIRE Tonight

Penobscot Theatre Company is set to kick-off its 42nd season with Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash, created by Richard Malby, Jr. and conceived by William Meade. The show will feature 38 hits from the legendary Man in Black, brought to new life by five musician/actors playing multiple instruments. It will run tonight, September 10, through September 27 at the historic Bangor Opera House.

Penobscot Theatre Company to Stage Maine Premiere of ROCK OF AGES

Penobscot Theatre Company is thrilled to announce that it has secured the theatrical rights to Rock of Ages, and will produce the Maine premiere as a bonus show this season. 'I am not going to lie,' said Producing Artistic Director Bari Newport, 'I screamed and literally jumped for joy when I got the call. It's a great honor to be selected to premier the show, and we will absolutely do it justice!' While performance dates and times have yet to be announced, Newport reports that the show will open in June and run into July to serve residents and summer visitors alike.
Judy Garland Talk at Rockland Public Library Set for Today

Award-winning music producer, critic and translator Lawrence Schulman will give a talk on Judy Garland, entitled 'Moments of Magic,' at the Rockland Public Library today, September 3, 2015 at 6 P.M. Admission is free. The one-and-a-quarter hour talk will examine Judy Garland's life and career, and feature nine audio-video clips, to be followed by a question and answer. Schulman will endeavor to answer the question: 'If I had just one hour to convince you of Judy Garland's place in classic American popular music, what film and television performances would I choose?'

As its mainstage season draws to a close, Maine State Music Theatre presented the second of its offerings for young audiences, Shrek Jr.,The Musical in an ambitiously staged interpretation of the 2008 David Lindsay-Abaire-Jeanine Tesori musical version of the Disneyworks film that packed Brunswick's Pickard Theatre for four performances on August 17th. Though MSMT has always offered children's theatre as part of its summer season, this Shrek distinguishes itself in its exuberant and deliciously talented young cast, its impressive production values, and its decision to address the show to a broader family audience. To see toddlers and grandparents, the literally-young and young-at-heart all relishing the energetic performance was an absolute delight!

Though originally written and recorded by Otis Redding in 1965, Franklin reimagined the song as a declaration from a strong and confident woman, which is why it is one of the featured songs in The Arundel Barn Playhouse production of Beehive: The '60's Musical.

Penobscot Theatre Company has announced the near completion of its Firehouse Project, a community-fueled effort to turn former Bangor Fire Station #6 into a vibrant theatrical production hub. Renovations at the 4,800-sf facility at 14 Griffin Road, Bangor, are wrapping up and the company is celebrating with a ribbon-cutting, private donor reception, and public open house, Monday, August 24. 'Thanks to the extraordinary support of our patrons and theatre-lovers nationwide, we now have the space we need to continue creating great works in the heart of Maine,' said Executive Director Mary Budd. 'We're excited to throw open the doors and show-off our new scene and costume shops and the region's first drama dorm!'
