bastard Neither bright nor an advocate of terror": it is difficult to identify Jacques Vergès. Indeed, sometimes despised, hated, admired and sometimes, the brilliant lawyer, known worldwide for his CV, which are the most "big" criminals of our time like Slobodan Milosevic and Klaus Barbie, leaves no one indifferent. True to his belief that every man, whatever his crime, has the right to be defended, yet it is with humility that engages Jacques Vergès, on stage at the Théâtre de la Madeleine in Paris, a theatrical monologue -like self-trial. His first play, ironically called Serial litigant, carries a great lesson in humanity, as long as you deign to approach so philosophical, that is to say, apart from prejudice.

To support this introduction, Jacques Vergès story then the tragedy of Sophocles' Antigone, built like a trial, the theatricality of the trial of Joan of Arc, or the literary adaptation of the trial of Antoine Berthet, better known today as the name of Julien Sorel. These trials, made respectively in antiquity, the Middle Ages and modern times, all three are what he calls "trial of rupture" that is to say an accused facing trial and a Judge referring to different values, even antagonistic.

Yet these criminals of the past became heroes of history, drama and literature, and this precisely for their humanity. But Jacques Verges does more than raise the obvious relationship between tragedy, romance and trial. Assuming that the crime does not exist in the animal kingdom and, therefore, it can be perpetrated by man, Jacques Vergès points to the part of humanity inherent in any criminal.

Whether Antigone, Joan of Arc, Antoine Berthet or Jack the Ripper, the criminal is still a man or a woman, whose values, although contrary to the law, are no less defensible. And it is precisely the role of the lawyer for their defense. Because, as recalled Me Vergès, defending, it is in any way excuse or justify a crime, it is understood.

"Some fans cry out of the blue" bravo ", others" thank you ". Is that the actor-lawyer made us in his plea-monologue part of our common memory. His word, gradually becomes exorcism, he became mesmerized the audience jury we do not know how lost French cause may be found and obscurely. The experience is amazing. And this theater, an adventure of a citizen spectator, judge. Man of the world. Télérama

"Vergès sold Vergès engineering, master of polemics is a lawyer by profession, if not the oldest in the world, raises ethical questions as much ... The man was able to deceive, to commit with what is called the opinion inexcusable. He remains a passionate yet knows how to transmit this energy that animates the last fifty years. Where the discourse of political rings hollow, that the lawyer promoted showman returns to the rhetorical principles that carried the crowds. Terrifying at the head of a country or a court, but impressive on stage. And here it is. Evene.fr
