Highview Arts Center debuts new concept elevating local Playwrights and Directors

Louisville, KY - March 31, 2024 - Highview Arts Center (HAC) is proud to announce the launch of "Originals Night," a captivating showcase featuring two distinct one-act plays that have been developed from last year's highly acclaimed Ten Minute New Play Festival (now named Quick Quills). This exciting event promises to deliver an evening of innovative storytelling and creative prowess, showcasing the emerging talent of playwrights Taylor Vetter and Erin Fitzgerald.

"Feng Shui," penned by Taylor Vetter, offers audiences a darkly comedic exploration of the life of a murderous robot navigating the challenges of urban living. Set against the backdrop of a bustling cityscape, this thought-provoking piece delves into themes of adaptation, identity, and the unexpected twists of fate.

In contrast, "Baggage Claim," written by Erin Fitzgerald, takes theatergoers on a whimsical journey through the mundane yet surprisingly insightful world of inanimate objects. As two pieces of luggage patiently await their owners at the airport, they embark on a hilarious and heartwarming adventure, observing the quirks and idiosyncrasies of the diverse array of passengers passing through.

"We are thrilled to present 'Originals Night' as a platform for showcasing the exceptional talent of emerging playwrights," said Taylor Torsky, Artistic Director of Highview Arts Center. "These two one-act plays offer a fresh perspective on contemporary storytelling, and promote the writing and directing of the participants. The vision started in the parking lot of HAC, with the question What do we do after the 10- minute plays?. So we start with a 10-minute play in Quick Quills, select two plays/playwrights to expand into a one-act the following season, and then in the third year, HAC will choose one of the one-acts to develop into a fully staged production as a part of the season. The goal is to walk hand in hand with the playwright and director, to support them the space to grow from a 10-minute short into a fully produced play.”

Directed by Scout Larken (Baggage Claim) and Jake Rosenbergr (Feng Shui) and featuring a talented ensemble cast with both returning and new faces to the HAC stage, "Originals Night" promises to captivate audiences with its innovative narratives and compelling performances.

"Originals Night" will run at the Highview Arts Center from April 18th to April 21st, with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 PM and Sunday matinees at 2:30 PM. Tickets are $10 and now available for purchase online or at the Highview Arts Center box office.
