Theatre Unleashed Is SLEEPING AROUND at Hollywood Fringe This Month

By:

Over the past few years, Theatre Unleashed has built quite the Hollywood Fringe reputation, mainly thanks to its signature series, the wildly popular and critically acclaimed 25 Plays Per Hour. But this year, we're doing something different. And it's sure to get people talking.

"We considered bringing 25PPH back but we were also looking for a new challenge," said Jenn Scuderi Crafts, the company's Artistic Director. "After all, that's what Fringe is for. We're always looking to get better, to stretch. We wanted to push ourselves and step out of our comfort zone. But we knew we also had to bring something that was going to stand out and leave an impression."

Theatre Unleashed is excited to bring the original work Sleeping Around to Theatre Asylum in June as part of Fringe. A World Premiere, Sleeping Around interweaves the stories of nine very different people searching for intimacy and all connected by sex, relationships and the sometimes hysterical, sometimes crushing emotional baggage of both.

"I read La Ronde in college and loved the structure," said the show's writer Cesar Abella, an accomplished playwright whose work has appeared on stage in London, New York and L.A., including five other times with TU. "I'm usually rather unruly as a writer, so I think constricting myself to a set of rules works for me, so I made myself write a play in this circular style, but about the weirdness of dating and meeting and having sex with people."

The personal yet universal nature of the play as well as its sexiness is what stood out for Scuderi Crafts as well as Director Wendy Gough Soroka, a Fringe veteran who has brought her one-woman show The Divine Madness of Isabella to Fringe in 2013 and directed the acclaimed Friends Like These in 2014.

"Directing for Fringe is exciting because the limitations force you to be simple and precise with your choices," she said. "You have to figure out exactly what you have to have and nothing more - whittling away anything unnecessary. What's left is tight, specific and incredibly engaging."

Sleeping Around is the latest offering from the company which has already seen the 2015 season bring two massive hits with Ligature Marks and Boy Gets Girl as well as the return of the company's Late Night Series and original collaboration project Passages.
