TU Brings Childhood Nostalgia to Fringe with Two Shows!

By:

Participants since its inaugural year, Theatre Unleashed is excited to once again be back at Hollywood Fringe, this time bringing two shows and a heavy dose of heroes, villains and nostalgia. TU proudly presents The Spidey Project and Three Can Keep a Secret, both playing in June at Studio/Stage.

In The Spidey Project, nerdy social outcast Peter Parker takes on an alter ego as he attempts to defeat a dastardly collection of terrifying villains and perhaps his biggest nemesis of all...himself. This critically acclaimed work from Justin Moran (POPE! An Epic Musical) is the stuff of theatre legend. In 2011, a group of writers, actors, and musicians set out to stage a musical parody of the Spider-Man origin story through clear, simple story telling, comedy and character driven theater. They wanted to do justice to the hero we all know and love without being bogged down with lavish sets or dangerous stunts. The show, the FIRST Spider-Man play, went up for only two performances in New York before swinging into Los Angeles a year later for a sold-out run at Theatre Unleashed. Today, when we need a hero now more than ever, Spidey is back with additional material and brand new songs!

"At the time, The Spidey Project turned out to be a perfect theatrical event, but over the years, cracks began to appear in the play itself," said Moran, who is also directing. "There were characters I would have liked to flush out a bit more, scenes that I'd liked to have tied together a bit tighter, and moments that asked for songs we didn't have time to write. When Theatre Unleashed started talking about bringing it back my team and I were emphatically on board and Spidey 2.0 was launched."

In Three Can Keep a Secret, what was supposed to be an easy score turns into nuthin' but a friggin' mess. Whack the mark. Stage the scene. Take the money. Retire to Cabo. That's how it was supposed to go down. But for poor wannabe gangsters Moose and Sonny, a really bad night is only just beginning. Three Can Keep A Secret, a new play by Gregory Crafts (Friends Like These, Super Sidekick: The Musical) is a darkly funny and slightly twisted interactive crime thriller where the audience chooses how the story proceeds while the anti-heroes attempt to literally get away with murder. With multiple decision points throughout the story for audiences to vote on, no two performances will be the same!

"What I love about this play is that the world it exists in is this weird super serious yet super funny limbo that I find really fun," said Director JacoB Smith. "It's a comedy of errors but the characters understandably take their situations so seriously, it almost becomes a farce. The audience choice aspect of it was just the cherry on top for me and its going to appeal to a lot of people. How often are we sitting in a play wishing something would happen or not happen? With Three Can Keep a Secret, the power is in the audience's hands."
