SummerSounds 2011 Hed at the Hollywood Bowl, Begins July 5

By: Apr. 19, 2011

The Hollywood Bowl celebrates its 44th year of presenting SummerSounds, one of the most popular children's festivals in Southern California. The six-week festival of music and arts for children ages 3 to 11 takes place weekday mornings. Beginning on Tuesday, July 5, and running weekdays until Friday, August 12, with two performances each Monday through Friday, at 10am and 11:15am, each SummerSounds program explores the music from one of the many unique neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles, where diverse cultures influence and enrich one another in unique ways. Art workshops guided by professional artists are also offered for children and their families before or after each performance. Children may choose a project - for example, drawing, painting or sculpture - and learn about art, artists and different cultures while they have fun creating art based on a theme. Tickets for SummerSounds are $7 (music) and $5 (art).

SummerSounds guides Emily, Mr. Kay and Mr. Barnabus lead each journey and discover music, dance and art that originate in the dynamic cultures of Korea, African-Amercian gospel music, and Ireland:

Koreatown: The Korean Classical Music and Dance Company, July 5 - 8; 11 - 15
Music: The Korean Classical Music and Dance Company led by Don Kim leads guests on an exploration of authentic Korean music, with their unique instruments and their exciting, elegant fan dances.
Art: Celebrate Korean culture - make a musical instrument, make your own fan and much more.

Gospel in Hollywood: Sylvia St. James & The St. James Singers, July 18 - 22; 25 - 29
Music: With their joyful gospel music, Sylvia St. James & the St. James Singers lift spirits and get hands clapping! Families will be inspired to find gospel music in their own neighborhoods.
Art: Get into the Gospel spirit - paint pictures, make a beaded necklace and much more.

Irish in LA: Ken O'Malley, August 1 - 5; 8 - 12
Music: Ken O'Malley belts out a feisty blend of traditional and new Irish folk music. His passionate stories of his homeland delight and amuse, while Irish step dancers enliven the party.
Art: Explore Irish heritage - create a sculpture, make a beaded painting and much more.
