A Noise Within (ANW), the acclaimed repertory theatre company, announces its annual "Scholar's Society" program, comprised of a summer literature club and two workshops that explore the historical, political, philosophical, and cultural influences of classical masterpieces presented during the company's upcoming season. Guest experts examine Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, or What You Will, and Antony and Cleopatra; Eugene O'Neill's Desire Under the Elms; Pierre Corneille's The Illusion (adapted by Tony Kushner), and Molière's The Bungler. Additionally, the two dynamic workshops offer an inside peek into the artistic process through interactive discussions with directors, designers, composers, and other artists that collaborate to create A Noise Within's special brand of theatre magic. "Scholar's Society," established as a forum for ideas related to and inspired by the plays, is designed to engage members in challenging and lively conversations.

Literature club sessions run every other week beginning Wednesday, July 20 through Wednesday, September 14, 2011, with two workshops planned for later in the season. The first session on July 20 is from 6 to 7:30 pm, followed by four additional dates on August 3, 17, 31 and September 14 from 7 to 8:30 pm. The majority of the sessions take place at A Noise Within's theatre at 234 South Brand Blvd, Glendale, with the possibility that the final sessions will be held in the company's new 33,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art venue in Pasadena, where the 2011-12 season opens on October 29. "Scholar's Society" membership, which is tax deductible, is $300 per person, or $550 per couple.

A Noise Within is the only year-round classical repertory company in Southern California and one of only a handful in the entire country dedicated solely to producing classical dramatic literature in the repertory tradition of rotating productions with a resident company of professional artists. It has been lauded by critics as a "premiere classical theatre company," and an "outstanding ensemble" whose "vibrantly theatrical" "brilliant productions" are "freshly imagined," "exceptional," "invigorating," "riveting," "brilliantly atmospheric," "inspired," and "masterfully crafted." Founded 20 years ago with $3,000 from the Elliotts' savings account, ANW quickly established itself as one of the region's key theatre companies, attracting fiercely loyal audiences and consistently high praise from the media for its productions and as a key force in arts education. The company has presented more than 135 plays from the classics of world literature, each season producing works from authors ranging from Shakespeare and Molière to Ibsen, O'Neill and Shaw to Miller and Williams.
