Disappearing Inc. has announced that the world premiere of SMOKE AND MIRRORS, written and performed by Albie Selznick, produced by Michelle Grant and directed by Paul Millet and Bettina Zacar is EXTENDING through Sunday, December 18 at the Santa Monica Playhouse, 1211 Fourth Street in Santa Monica.

SMOKE AND MIRRORS is a magic show with a twist! Magician Albie Selznick, takes you on a fantastical journey to heal the loss of a father, bond with Houdini and face his biggest fears... in order to become a “MASTER ILLUSIONIST!”

ABOUT THE CREATIVE TEAM

ALBIE SELZNICK (Creator/Performer) was co-founder of The Mums, a popular circus/ theatre trio of the 80’s/90’s. The LA TIMES said, “The Mums do for the arts of juggling and magic what Elvis did for rock and roll,” Andy Warhol gave them a two-page pictorial in INTERVIEW magazine, and The LA WEEKLY put them on their cover calling them “The Best Performance Troupe in?LA”. The Mums opened for rock bands Devo, Berlin, and Duran Duran. Their plays were produced in LA at the Matrix, The Odyssey and The Taper Too, and were directed by Tim Robbins and Paul Sand, among others. The Mums received multiple theatre awards.
Albie is a member of the Magic Castle, where he will once again be Performing with The Mums, the week of April Fools, 2012.

Today, Albie is known primarily as an actor, performing on TV, stage and film. He is a member of the Road Theatre Company where he has performed in new plays by Keith Huff and Craig Wright. He has played the Fool in Robert Wilson’s King Lear and Mercutio in Deaf West’s Romeo and Juliet. He performed opposite Glenne Headly in Detachments, produced by Beth Henley and Amy Madigan, and played Chandel/Poche in the Ovation Award-winning A Flea in Her Ear at Stages Theatre Center. On television, Albie is probably best known for playing Rabbi Ben on Suddenly Susan and the evil D.A. Owen Pomerantz on The Young and The Restless. He has guest starred such shows as Southland, Dexter, Desperate Housewives, NCIS, and all three CSI’s. In January 2012, Albie will star in the West Coast Première of Theresa Rebeck’s The Water’s Edge at The Road Theatre Company, directed by Sam Anderson.

PAUL MILLET (Co-Director) Paul’s directing experience extends throughout the Southern California region. He is the Co-Artistic Director of Unbound Productions and one of the creators of both the Wicked Lit and History Lit theatre festivals. For Wicked Lit, Paul has directed A Ghost Story (2011 ~ TCG National Conference), The Body Snatcher (2011), The Chimes (2010), The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (2009) & The Fall of the House of Usher (2009 ~ also Playwright).

Other past credits include Jump/Cut (West Coast Premiere) at the Arena Stage for the Arts in Hollywood; Incorruptible and Southern Comforts (LA Premiere) at Theatre 40 in Beverly Hills; Driving Miss Daisy, The Curious Savage and The Prisoner of Second Avenue at the High Street Arts Center in Moorpark; Southern Comforts at the Indian Wells theatre in Palm Desert; the two original one-acts, Alpha Best and Best Chance, Chance Best for Variations on a Theme at The Chance Theater in Anaheim; Don’t Dress for Dinner, Spike Heels, A Weekend Near Madison, the world premieres of Exmagare and The Unsinkable Bismark, as well as the late night serial Ambition at the Eclectic Company Theatre in N. Hollywood: The Memorandum at Vox Humana in Century City CA; and the original play A Song for Me for the New Voices Playwrights Theatre in Santa Ana. Paul is a proud member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, Theatre Communications Group and LA Stage Alliance. In his spare time Paul runs, reads, cooks and freelances as a television editor.

BETTINA ZACAR (Co-Director) is a Director/Actor/Designer/Stage Manager. In love with theatre, Bettina has found her voice directing. Originally from a suburb in Washington DC, Bettina grew up in several local theaters. After changing her college major several times, she couldn’t deny the drive of her love of theatre. Jump cut – many years later…she moved to Los Angeles and became a member of The Road Theatre Company where she won a VAlley Theatre League Artistic Director Achievement (ADA) Award and more recently honored with an LA Weekly Best Actress nomination and a Best Ensemble win for the world premiere of Tom Jacobson’s “The Friendly Hour.”

SMOKE AND MIRRORS will feature Sound and Lighting design by Bettina Zacar. The show will be stage-managed by Carina Winkler.

ABOUT SCHEDULE AND PRICING

SMOKE AND MIRRORS is EXTENDING through Sunday, December 18 at the Santa Monica Playhouse, 1211 Fourth Street in Santa Monica.

Performances are Saturdays at 7pm & 10pm and Sundays at 7pm.
