New Production Of 42ND STREET Taps Its Way Into The Norris Theatre

A dazzling new regional production of the Tony Award-winning song and dance fable of Broadway, "42nd Street," opens April 27 at the 450-seat Norris Theatre on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Produced by Palos Verdes Performing Arts, the musical will run through May 13 for 11 performances.

The PV Performing Arts production of "42nd Street" features the original Gower Champion choreography and a 16-piece orchestra. Direction and choreography are by Broadway tour veteran Christine Negherbon, with musical direction by Ryan O'Connell. The production stars equity actors Ashley Ruth Jones (Peggy Sawyer); Austin Miller (Billy Lawlor); Kevin Bailey (Julian Marsh) and Sandy Bainum (Dorothy Brock).

With a book by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble, music by Harry Warren and lyrics by Al Dubin, the production features some of the greatest songs ever written, including "We're In The Money," "Lullaby of Broadway," "Shuffle Off To Buffalo," "I Only Have Eyes For You" and of course "42nd Street."

Based on Busby Berkeley's 1933 movie, "42nd Street" tells the story of Peggy Sawyer, a starry-eyed young dancer who leaves her quiet Allentown home for New York City to audition for a glitzy new Broadway musical. She joins the chorus and when the legendary leading lady breaks her ankle, newcomer Peggy is given a one in a million chance to take over the role, and against all odds, becomes a star.

A hit from the start, the original production of "42nd Street" opened on Broadway in 1980, where it ran for nearly nine years. The show won 1981 Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Choreography, and the long-running Broadway revival, which opened in 2001, earned two Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical.

Performances during the April 27 - May 13 run of "42nd Street" are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays and Saturday May 5 and 12. Tickets prices are $30- $80, and can be purchased online at palosverdesperformingarts.com or by calling the box office at (310) 544-0403. The Norris Theatre is located at 27570 Norris Center Drive on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
