The Covina Center for the Performing Arts is proud to announce Larry Watts as director for the upcoming summer production of the Broadway hit Godspell. The show will run from June 26 until August 2.

Larry Watts has a long theatrical resume as director, choreographer and costume designer here in the Southern California area, going back to the 1970s. Larry was the Managing Director of South Bay Conservatory and of the South County Musical Theatre. Most recently, he directed the South Bay Conservatory production of The Mikado. He is known to the CCPA audience as the costume designer for the sold out run of The Light in the Piazza.

Watts will be directing the 2001 revival version of the 1976 Broadway blockbuster Godspell. The revival has updated orchestrations, and Watts has moved the musical in a contemporary set, rather than the "flower children and hippie" setting of the original.

In the tuneful first act, the characters sing parables that follow the Gospel according to St. Matthew, and the second act moves on to the Passion story. The musical style involves consistently catchy pop and is inspirational without being preachy. Made up of a succession of vignettes illustrating biblical parables, Godspell is easy to adapt and update.
