LA Philharmonic Announces Young Artists Winners, 6/9

By: Mar. 28, 2011

The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association today announced the winners of the inaugural Young Artists Competition, generously sponsored by Fidelity Investments. The March 26 competition was held on stage at Walt Disney Concert Hall, with violinist Jessie Chen and cellist Edvard Pogossian winning an opportunity to perform with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and conductor Thomas Wilkins. The Young Artists Finale concert, a private event, will take place on June 9, 2011 at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

The Young Artists Competition is open to all public high school students in Los Angeles County. Applications for the 2012 Young Artists Competition will be accepted in Fall 2011.

For the 2011 Young Artists Competition, seven violinists and six cellists in grades 9 through 12 competed in a preliminary round where they were asked to perform an unaccompanied classical selection of their choice. In the final round, three violinists performed the final movement of Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64, and three cellists performed the Saint-Saëns Allegro Appassionato for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 43. The two winners will perform works by Mendelssohn and Saint-Saëns at the June 9 Young Artists Finale concert.

A panel of LA Phil musicians served as judges for the competition, including violinists Mark Kashper, Mitchell Newman, and Bing Wang; and cellists Jason Lippman, Gloria Lum, and Daniel Rothmuller.
