LA Phil Hosts Free Youth Orchestra Festival Day & YOLA Instrument Drive

The Los Angeles Philharmonic presents Youth Orchestra Festival Day at Walt Disney Concert Hall on Saturday, May 14, 2011 from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., featuring the Santa Clarita Valley Youth Orchestra, the Los Angeles Music and Art School LAPCA (Los Angeles Philanthropic Committee for the Arts) Orchestra, and the YOLA EXPO Center Youth Orchestra (joined by students from the YOLA at HOLA Orchestra). Each youth orchestra will perform for approximately 45 minutes. Tickets are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Patrons can pick up tickets at the check-in table on Grand Avenue in front of Walt Disney Concert Hall 60 minutes prior to each orchestra's performance.

The Santa Clarita Valley Youth Orchestra will perform a program of Weber, Schubert and a world premiere by Derrick Spiva; the LAMusArt LAPCA Orchestra will perform a program of Grieg and Copland; and the YOLA EXPO Center Youth Orchestra will perform a program featuring Bizet, Tchaikovsky, a work by LA Phil composer fellow Aaron Ishibashi, and two pieces accompanied by YOLA at HOLA's choir and wind ensemble.

Santa Clarita Valley Youth Orchestra and LAMusArt LAPCA Orchestra, in addition to four other local youth orchestras, actively participate in the Youth Orchestra Partners Program, a two-year partnership with the Los Angeles Philharmonic that affords Los Angeles-based youth orchestras coaching sessions and master classes with LA Phil musicians, concert tickets to WDCH and the Hollywood Bowl, and the opportunity to perform on the stage of Walt Disney Concert Hall. The first concert of this kind took place at Walt Disney Concert Hall in the fall of 2007 as a part of the LA Phil's International Youth Orchestra Festival.

Due to overwhelming response from the community last year, the Los Angeles Philharmonic is hosting its second annual YOLA Instrument Drive to support YOLA, Gustavo Dudamel's signature El Sistema-inspired program. Donations can be made May 12 - 14, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m., and May 15, 12 p.m. - 2 p.m. To receive tax credit for donations, instruments must be appraised by a third party and a letter must be provided with their determined value. Requested donations include 1/2-size cellos, double reeds (oboe, bassoon, English horn, etc.), headphones, splitters, MP3 players and any quality orchestral instruments in good to excellent condition. Also being accepted are music stands, metronomes, tuners, orchestral accessories (mouth pieces, new reeds, etc.) and school supplies (notebooks, calculators, markers, etc.).

Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA)
Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA) is the Los Angeles Philharmonic's initiative to provide access to free, high quality instrumental and orchestral education in order to promote youth development. Central to YOLA is the LA Phil's plan to build, with community partners, youth orchestras in underserved communities throughout Los Angeles. YOLA families are engaged in making music themselves while supporting their children's development, with the vision that YOLA neighborhoods become vibrant centers of musical culture with a deepened sense of community. YOLA is inspired by El Sistema, the Venezuelan music education system that nurtured the Los Angeles Philharmonic's Music Director, Gustavo Dudamel. The YOLA EXPO Center Youth Orchestra, the first project of YOLA, is a partnership among the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, The Harmony Project, the EXPO Center and the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. The YOLA EXPO Center Youth Orchestra has empowered hundreds of students since its inception in 2007, and serves students ages 2-17 from more than 60 schools in its five-mile radius. In September 2010, the LA Phil launched the second YOLA site at Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA), an after-school community center in LA's Rampart District. YOLA at HOLA engages 100 first and fourth graders who are immersed in instrument instruction, singing/solfège, musicianship, ensembles, and daily academic tutoring. This year, classes will be added as other students continue, leading to the organic development of orchestras at the heart of the program.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, under the vibrant leadership of Gustavo Dudamel, presents the finest in orchestral and chamber music, recitals, new music, jazz, world music and holiday concerts at two of the most remarkable locations anywhere to experience music - Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. In addition to a 30-week winter subscription season at Walt Disney Concert Hall, the LA Phil presents a 12-week summer festival at the legendary Hollywood Bowl, summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and home of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. In fulfilling its commitment to the community, the Association's involvement with Los Angeles extends to educational concerts, children's programming and community concerts, ever seeking to provide inspiration and delight to the broadest possible audience.
