Gustavo Dudamel Leads Los Angeles Philharmonic in Brahms Unbound

By:

In the celebrated tradition of the LA Phil's thematic cycles Beethoven Unbound and Sibelius Unbound, Music Director Gustavo Dudamel presides over Brahms Unbound with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The complete Brahms symphonies will be performed plus the deeply moving Requiem (with vocalists Christine Schäfer and Matthias Goerne, plus the Los Angeles Master Chorale) and more, juxtaposed with contemporary works, including the West coast premiere of composer Steven Mackey's Beautiful Passing (May 12 - 15) and the U.S. premiere of composer Sofia Gubaidulina's Glorious Percussion (May 19, 21 & 22). Brahms Unbound begins May 5, and concludes the 2010/11 season at Walt Disney Concert Hall on June 5.

The June 5 concert is part of LA Phil LIVE (www.laphil.com/LAPhilLive) - an immersive sight and sound experience, featuring full concert performances broadcast live from the iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall to movie theater audiences in over 450 theaters across the U.S. and Canada. Theater-goers will experience up-close and dramatic views of Dudamel and the orchestra in action, captured with multiple high definition cameras and in breathtaking 5.1 digital surround sound. Each broadcast transports audiences behind the music for an insider's look at the LA Phil via the "backstage pass" feature, which includes live behind-the-scenes interviews, rehearsal footage and a post-concert Q&A.

Two hours prior to the performances on May 12 - 15, the LA Phil will be hosting its second annual YOLA Instrument Drive to support Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA), Gustavo Dudamel's signature El Sistema-inspired program that provides access to free, high quality instrumental and orchestral education in order to promote youth development. Donations can be made May 12 - 14, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m., and May 15, 12 p.m. - 2 p.m. To receive tax credit for donations, instruments must be appraised by a third party and a letter must be provided with their determined value. Requested donations include 1/2-size cellos, double reeds (oboe, bassoon, English horn, etc.), headphones, splitters, MP3 players and any quality orchestral instruments in good to excellent condition. Also being accepted are music stands, metronomes, tuners, orchestral accessories (mouth pieces, new reeds, etc.) and school supplies (notebooks, calculators, markers, etc.).

For further details or questions, call 323.850.2000 from 10am - 6pm daily, or visit LAPhil.com.
