EXILES Ends Run at Hayworth Theater, 5/2

By:

The Hayworth Theater and Fixed Mark Productions will end their run of the critically-acclaimed play Exiles, a world premiere drama written by Carlos Lacamara and directed by David Fofi, on Sunday, May 2.

In the summer of 1980, Fidel Castro announced that he would allow Cubans living in the U.S. to retrieve their relatives from the island. When their boats arrived at the port of Mariel, however, they were only allowed to take certain members of their families aboard and were required to take criminals and mental patients along with them back to the U.S.

Exiles tells the story of Rolando and his son who carry a convicted murderer, a raving lunatic and, instead of the mother he hasn't seen in 20 years, Rolando has been forced to take his brother-in-law, a man who had betrayed him to the Communists 20 years before. When a storm leaves their tiny vessel helplessly adrift at sea, tensions escalate as the refugees find themselves in a desperate battle against the elements, each other, and the demons of their past.
Said the L.A. Weekly's Paul Birchall, "The play's emotions crackle, and the piece brims with real fury and regret," and in Back Stage, Jennie Webb wrote, "Playwright Carlos Lacamara's drama puts a powerful human face on the Mariel Boat Lift. The outstanding company of actors draws us in hook, line, and sinker."

The cast includes (in alphabetical order) Mark Adair-Rios, Alex Fernandez, Mila Hernandez, Carlos Lacamara, Andrew Quevado McReynolds, and Khary Payton.
