Academy to Break the Sound Barrier in NYC 4/25

By:

Whether it is the clamorous car chase from "The French Connection" or the claustrophobic, terrifying final scenes from "The Silence of the Lambs," sound plays an integral part in bringing films to life. To explore and explain how a soundtrack is created, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' "Monday Nights with Oscar®" series will present "An Evening of Sound with Chris Newman and Tom Fleischman" on Monday, April 25, at 7 p.m. at the Academy Theater at Lighthouse International in New York City.

The program will present film clips demonstrating how the raw tracks recorded on a set become part of the finished soundtrack. Among the clips to be featured are "The Silence of the Lambs" and "Philadelphia," along with the presenters' stories of working with directors Jonathan Demme, Martin Scorsese, Milos Forman and others. The audience will be encouraged to participate in the discussion.

Newman and Fleischman have a combined 76 years in sound mixing and 12 Oscar® nominations between them. Newman has won Academy Awards® in the Sound category for "Exorcist," Amadeus" and "The English Patient." Fleischman has been nominated for "Reds," "Silence of the Lambs," "Gangs of New York" and "The Aviator."

Audio tracks for the presentation are courtesy of MGM, Twentieth Century Fox and Sony Pictures Entertainment.
Tickets for "An Evening of Sound" are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid ID. Tickets may be purchased online at www.oscars.org or by mail (a printable order form is available in the Events & Exhibitions section of the website). Tickets may also be purchased at the box office prior to the event (subject to availability).

The Academy Theater is located at 111 East 59th Street in New York City. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. All seating is unreserved. For more information, visit www.oscars.org or call (212) 821-9251.
