Confession time—I may be the only person in the world who hasn’t seen Stranger Things, but after watching the production of Stranger Sings! at University of Arkansas Little Rock Theatre, I am about to go binge a whole season! Director Caelon Colbert leans all the way into the parody and sheer theatrical chaos to deliver a night that is equal parts hilarious tribute and loving spoof. Running April 15–19, this production proved that UALR Theatre knows exactly how to tap into the fun of pop culture while delivering a polished, high-energy performance.

For those like me who are coming in fresh, Stranger Sings! is a musical parody of the hit Netflix series, following a group of kids in the 1980s as they encounter mysterious disappearances, government conspiracies, and supernatural forces lurking just beyond their suburban world. At the center is a young girl with extraordinary powers who escapes a lab and befriends the boys, all while a frantic mother searches for her missing son. The show cleverly condenses the major beats of the series into a fast-paced, tongue-in-cheek adventure. Even without prior knowledge, the storytelling is clear and wildly entertaining.

What makes this production shine is how confidently it commits to the bit. Colbert understands that parody only works when it’s played with absolute sincerity, and this cast dives in headfirst. The performances are heightened just enough to wink at the audience while still grounding the characters in recognizable emotional stakes. It’s a tricky balance, but one that this ensemble handles beautifully.

The student performers bring a contagious enthusiasm that fuels the entire production, but what truly sent this audience over the edge was the comedy. The characters had me laughing so hard I was in tears—full, uncontrollable, can’t-catch-your-breath kind of laughter. Their comedic timing is razor sharp, their physical choices bold and fearless, and every exaggerated reaction or perfectly placed pause lands exactly where it should. And yes, I heard the playful chatter that they might need to bump the rating from PG-13 to PG-15—and after seeing the show, I completely get it… but in the best possible way! The humor has just enough edge to keep the adults howling while still maintaining that fun, over-the-top parody spirit.

A huge part of that success comes from this fantastic cast, who each carve out memorable, high-energy performances. The trio of boys -- Cooper Sikes as the endearing Mike, Bannon Jones brings as the lovable awkward Dustin, and Madisyn Thomas as the quirky Lucas -- keep the story flowing with adorable teamwork.

The women really proved they had the comedic ability to not only match their male counterparts beat for beat, but often steal the moment entirely, delivering bold character choices and fearless physical comedy that kept the audience roaring with laughter.

Beatrice Robinson as Eleven is a standout with her odd movements and dramatic presentation. Amelia Strickland as Joyce is delightfully unhinged in the best way, fully embracing the frantic energy of a mother on a mission. Shelby Loftis shines as Nancy, leaning into her hormonal teenage persona.

But, my starry-heart eyes go to Kyra Hatley playing Barb. Her Pat-like persona completely won me over from the moment she stepped on stage, striking that perfect deadpan delivery that made every line land even harder. And then she sings—and wow. There’s a richness and control to her voice that cuts through the comedy and reminds you just how talented she is. It’s that rare combination of comedic brilliance and vocal strength that makes a performance unforgettable, and I am officially a huge fan.

And let’s talk about one of my absolute favorite elements—the live band. Under the direction of Dr. Lorissa Mason, the musicians brought an electric pulse to the entire production that you simply can’t replicate with pre-recorded tracks. I loved hearing the band in real time, driving the action forward with those synth-heavy, retro-inspired sounds that instantly transported us into the 1980s. There’s something so thrilling about feeling the music breathe along with the performers on stage, and this group did exactly that by supporting, enhancing, and elevating every musical moment.

Choreography by Katie Greer adds another layer of excitement to the production, embracing the bold, quirky style of the show while keeping the energy consistently high. The costumes are delightfully period-specific, packed with bold colors and iconic silhouettes that scream 1980s. Lighting choices make it spooky and moody, adding to the sci-fi feel.

So, consider me converted. The Upside Down is calling, and thanks to this energetic, hilarious production, I’m finally ready to see what everyone has been raving about.
