There’s something undeniably enchanting about stepping into the world of Into the Woods, where fairy tales intertwine, wishes come with consequences, and a single step off the path can change everything. At Ouachita Baptist University, that magic doesn’t just live on the stage, it radiates throughout the entire campus. From April 16–19, the Department of Theatre Arts brought Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s beloved musical to life under the direction of Daniel Stargel, with musical direction by Dr. Ian Aipperspach, creating a production that felt both whimsically magical and deeply rooted in truth.

With its clever weaving of classic fairy tale characters—Cinderella, Jack, Little Red Riding Hood, and the Baker and his Wife—the story follows a series of wishes gone awry, exploring what happens after “happily ever after.” The first act delights with humor and adventure, while the second act digs deeper into consequence, community, and responsibility. It’s a show that requires both technical precision and emotional maturity, and Ouachita’s students rose to the challenge with confidence and heart.

Director Daniel Stargel crafted a production that honored the heart of Into the Woods while allowing his students to shine. The storytelling was clear, the pacing was strong, and the emotional beats landed with impact. The ensemble worked beautifully together, navigating the show’s layered narrative with cohesion and energy. Vocally, the cast handled Sondheim’s famously demanding score with impressive skill, delivering both the rapid-fire lyrics and soaring melodies with confidence.

It was a treat to see Professor John Forkner step into the dual role of the Narrator and the Mysterious Man. There’s something special about watching a faculty member share the stage with students, and Forkner brought a grand presence with knowing authority to the role, guiding the story with clarity while also weaving himself seamlessly into its more poignant moments.

And speaking of standout performances, Genevieve Cooper was absolutely perfect as Little Red Riding Hood. She captured the character’s youthful innocence and curiosity with such authenticity, while also delivering impeccable comedic timing that had the audience smiling throughout. Her vocal performance was just as impressive, navigating Sondheim’s tricky rhythms with ease and clarity.

I also absolutely loved Jennie Higdon as the Baker’s Wife. She brought a warmth and relatability to the role that made every moment feel genuine. Higdon had wonderful chemistry with Brooks Harrison as the Baker, creating a partnership that made you want their wishes to come true. She also shared an intriguing dynamic with Xander Dalton as Conderella's Prince, adding an extra spark to their scenes that made them especially memorable.

Erika Johnson delivered a captivating performance as the Witch, fully embracing the character’s darker moments with a power that was impossible to ignore. She leaned into the intensity of the role with boldness and control, allowing the Witch’s and desperation to rise to the surface in a way that felt both raw and deeply authentic. Vocally, she commanded the stage, using every note to heighten the emotional weight of her scenes.

The vocals across this ensemble were simply amazing. Sondheim’s score is no small feat, but this cast handled it with confidence and clarity, blending beautifully in group numbers while still allowing individual voices to shine. Cinderella, in particular, brought a lovely tone and sincerity to her songs that made her moments especially captivating.

One of my personal favorite moments in the show is “Your Fault,” and this cast absolutely nailed it. The fast-paced, overlapping lyrics were delivered with precision and energy, turning the number into a whirlwind of comedic chaos that was so fun to watch. And I have to say, the two Princes brought some of the biggest laughs of the night. Their duets were hilarious, leaning fully into the over-the-top dramatics in the most delightful way.

And I would be remiss not to mention the live orchestra, which always does an amazing job at Ouachita. There is just something so special about hearing Sondheim’s intricate score performed live, and these musicians brought a richness and energy that elevated the entire production. Their musicality provided a strong foundation for the cast, enhancing every moment on stage and reminding us all why live music is such an essential part of the theatrical experience.

The set was absolutely breathtaking, adding another layer of magic to an already enchanting production. Led by Scenic Designer Eric Philips, the stage was beautifully constructed with multiple levels that allowed the different areas of the woods to unfold seamlessly before our eyes. But my starry-heart eyes go to the moving trees that seemed to float from scene to scene. It was an imaginative and whimsical touch that made the forest feel alive, as if it were a character all its own, quietly watching and shaping the journey of everyone who wandered through it.

As always, the costumes were beautiful. Led by Costume Designer Dr. Candice Aipperspach, the designs felt authentic to the world of the production. From the storybook charm of the fairy tale figures to the more grounded looks of the Baker and his Wife, every piece contributed to the storytelling in a meaningful way, enhancing both the visual appeal and the overall cohesion of the show.

One of the things that continues to set Ouachita Baptist University apart is the strength of its theatrical education. This is not just a program that produces shows, it cultivates artists. Time and time again, students from this program go on to become major contributors to the Arkansas theatre scene and beyond, making their mark across the United States, and the faculty plays a huge role in that success. Not only do the staff take an active role in their students' educations, but also many of Ouachita’s professors actively teach and work abroad during their breaks, bringing back a wealth of global experience that only enhances the education their students receive. That kind of real-world perspective is invaluable and clearly reflected in the caliber of performance on stage.

Beyond the performances,, there is also something incredibly special about experiencing theatre in a Christ-centered environment that values both excellence and purpose. Ouachita Baptist University fosters a space where students can pursue their artistic passions while also growing in their faith, and that balance is evident in the care and intention behind every aspect of this production and others that I have seen. The campus itself feels warm and inviting—like family—and that sense of community extends into the theatre. You can feel the support, the encouragement, and the shared joy both onstage and off.
