CABARET Comes to Walton Arts Center 1/19-21

The Tony Award-winning musical, Cabaret, will tantalize, challenge and entertain audiences January 19-21, 2018 at Walton Arts Center for a limited five-show run as part of the Procter & Gamble Broadway Series.

Set in 1931 Berlin as the Nazis are rising to power, Cabaret focuses on the nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub, and revolves around young American writer Cliff Bradshaw and his relationship with 32-year-old English cabaret performer Sally Bowles. The cabaret club serves as an escape from the issues of the day for the show's characters, but it is also a metaphor for the ominous political developments in the German state between 1919 and 1933.

A subplot involving the doomed romance between German boarding house owner Fraulein Schneider and her elderly suitor Herr Schultz, a Jewish fruit vendor, illustrates the escalating tensions and tragedies of the time period.

Cabaret's original musical production opened on Broadway in November 1966. The first run of Cabaret transferred from New York to London's Imperial Theatre and then back to Broadway Theatre before closing in September 1969, after 1,165 performances and 21 previews. Cabaret was revived in 1987, 1998 and in 2013.

This production is based on the second Broadway revival of Cabaret by Roundabout Theatre Company which opened in 1998 and received the Tony Award for Best Musical Revival that same year. The show was directed by Sam Mendes (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Skyfall, American Beauty) and choreographed by Rob Marshall (Damn Yankees, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Victor/Victoria). Cabaret is making its debut at Walton Arts Center.

The musical is based on the book by Joe Masteroff and John Van Druten's 1951 play, I Am a Camera, which was adapted from the short novel Goodbye to Berlin (1939) by Christopher Isherwood.
