MUMMIES OF THE WORLD Comes to Union Station One of North America's most popular traveling exhibitions , Mummies Of The World, is scheduled to close January 1 at Union Station. The exhibition will then begin its over-seas journey, launching its first ever European tour. The exhibition has been traveling the United States since July of 2010. Over the holidays, here in Kansas City, the 1,750,000th visitor is expected to experience Mummies of the World, making it one of the highest attended exhibitions nation-wide.

The blockbuster exhibit features real mummies and artifacts from across the world including Europe, South America and Ancient Egypt and changes century old perceptions, dramatized through Hollywood movies, of mummies and the process of mummification. Families across the United States have enjoyed what is described as "one of the rarest mummy collections on the planet," and time is running out to see the collection before it closes at Union Station.

Offering unprecedented insights into past cultures and civilizations, Mummies of the World features both natural and intentional mummification, including artifacts dating back more than 4,500 years. One of its most popular galleries features the first modern day mummy (MUMAB). MUMAB was created in 1994 at the University of Maryland at Baltimore, using replicas of the same tools, and following the same processes that ancient Egyptians used. The methods were recreated based on the findings and studies of Ancient Egyptian papyri. It is believed that Union Station is the only place in the world where a mummy of this fashion is currently on display.

At Mummies of the World, you will also see examples of natural mummification, both human and animal, as the exhibition includes a naturally mummified reptile, fish and dog. In the same vein, you will also see and learn about the Orlovits family. A mother; Veronica, father; Michael, and child Johannes who alongside their entire community died of the "White Plague", known today as Teburculosis. They were buried in a crypt under their church floorboards in Vac Hungry in the early 1800's. Almost 200 years later, while the church was undergoing renovations, a startling discovery was made, recognizing that the family, alongside their neighbors, had been naturally mummified from the cool dry climate in the crypt as well as the steady airflow under the church floorboards.

These are just a few of the many stories to experience in Mummies of the World, an exhibition displaying an incredibly rare collection of mummies and related artifacts, that you likely won't ever have the opportunity to see again. The exhibition closes at Union Station on January 1, 2018 before making its extended European debut. Tickets and information are available at UnionStation.org/Mummies. Don't Miss It!
