Job Description

The booking coordinator will be the organization’s point person for securing and coordinating engagements for our arts-in-education programs in schools and other community-based venues. This individual will work with NYC Kids Project’s leadership team to create and implement a strategy for marketing and scheduling educational puppetry programs. They will use the network of schools and venues that NYCKP has developed and research new opportunities, produce promotional materials and language, identify opportunities, build relationships with schools and community organizations, and pitch programs to potential partners. The booking coordinator will negotiate and secure contracts for engagements, work with the team to schedule and coordinate booked programs, and manage bookings invoicing.

This position requires an individual with excellent organizational skills, strong communication skills, and the ability to work well with multiple stakeholders. The booking coordinator should understand and have some experience with arts education or similar programming and be comfortable with engaging with partners in New York City schools, both public and independent (with a focus on Title 1 schools where possible). NYC Kids Project is a values-led organization. The booking coordinator will be an important part of our team and a representative of the organization, and must therefore be able to demonstrate a personal alignment with our values. While this individual will primarily work remotely, they must be located in NYC and willing to travel to participating schools and venues to meet with partners at various stages in the process.

About Us

NYC Kids Project teaches all children to embrace and nurture inclusion, belonging, and respect for all through puppetry, in order to create an inclusive society where all are valued for who they are. We partner with schools across New York City to create immersive experiences for young children through which they can practice empathy, inclusion, and kindness. We believe that early exposure to and interaction with characters of diverse backgrounds, identities, and abilities helps children see the richness of the world, become curious about the differences and commonality that are an essential part of the human experience, and empathize with those who are different from them.

Our Values

Children are taught early on to label in order to survive – good, bad, safe, unsafe, hot, cold, scary, comforting etc. NYC Kids Project offers young people the chance to ask more expansive questions of themselves, internally and externally, as the puppets create an “anything is accepted here” landscape. We owe them a chance to meet new friends, ask new questions and, during that process, get to know themselves better in relation to what they have already been taught by their family, school, community, and external media.

We believe in creating a space that promotes dialogue and really listens to kids, unlike theatre and television programming that talks at them. Through this dialogue, we hope that young people will gain awareness of different points of view, lenses, and perspectives on the world. We want students to know it is okay to be uncomfortable, it is okay to not be okay. We want kids to feel vulnerable and held at the same time, and the puppets help us do this.

We hope to counteract the increasing pressures on kids to conform, to be perfect, and to stay within a box of expectations, ensuring that every child knows that, as a human being they have value and they matter. We give them space to be unique, curious, and to celebrate and encourage their imagination and creativity. We hope to encourage the young people we work with to accept and embrace imperfections, to own their identity/body/labels, to build their resilience and mental wellbeing, and to de-emphasize external definitions of success and worth. In doing so, we hope to build their understanding of human value and to combat isolation and exclusion.
