Broadway Advocacy Coalition's Artivism Fellowship application open for writers, poets, composer, playwrights - Broadway Advocacy Coalition

LISTING INFORMATION

Writers, Playwrights, Composers, Poets! We invite you to apply for Broadway Advocacy Coalition's Artivism Fellowship. The fellowship will culminate in a piece created by the fellow developed to advance the advocacy efforts of Alliance for Quality Education's campaign: Solutions not Suspensions.

The Alliance for Quality Education is a coalition mobilizing communities across the state to keep New York true to its promise of ensuring a high quality public education to all students regardless of zip code. AQE is working to end the systemic racism and economic oppression in New York’s public schools that continues to shortchange generations of Black, Brown, low-income and immigrant students. Combining its legislative and policy expertise with grassroots organizing, AQE advances proven-to-work strategies that lead to student success and ultimately create a powerful public demand for a high quality education.

BAC defines Artivism as art that attempts to sway policy and culture to create a more just and equitable society. It is art that is made at the intersection of high quality artistry and rigorous policy understanding grounded in the stories and experiences of those most directly affected by the issue.

This year Broadway Advocacy Coalition is proud to support two narrative based creatives who are playwrights and/or composers in advancing social change in NYC through a partnership with an NYC based advocacy org.

The fellowship will enable participants to blend artistry, law, policy, and community engagement, and produce narratives with powerful impact in policy spaces where change can happen. In the process all the participants will work with community members to amplify the power of their stories informed by legal and policy research through collaboration with the Center of Institutional & Social Change at Columbia Law School and Artivism Fellowship Policy + Research Advisor, Jazly Liriano.

The fellowship will provide each participant with the following to develop an artivism piece in collaboration with Alliance for Quality Education utilizing BAC’s Theater of Change methodology.

Recipients of the fellowship will receive the following:

- Financial and production support: Selected fellows will receive a $14k stipend and $4.5k in production support

- Mentorship and networking opportunities with experts in the advocacy world and theater industry

- Policy + Research support

- A chance to embed yourself with Alliance for Quality Education

- Writers Retreat in March and May of 2023

- Participation in BAC’s week long Theater of Change course at Columbia Law School

- Cohort Meetings facilitated by the Lead Artivism Facilitator

What is BAC’s Theater of Change? We’re so glad you asked!

The center of BAC’s work is the Theater of Change methodology, developed in partnership with the Center for Institutional and Social Change at Columbia Law School. The programmatic framework is built around a process designed to create empathy-driven narratives and policy change, policy designed and implemented by inside-out leadership (leadership by people who have first-hand experience with racist systems). Artists join forces with law students and directly impacted community advocates to create performance pieces that envision a path and strategize how and where these performances can occur to achieve sustainable impact. Attendance in the Theater of Change course is mandatory and will be administered in person and must be attended in real time. Given the participatory nature of the course, missing sessions without advanced notice will significantly impact your collaboration group and your ability to participate in the proceeding sessions.

Applications will be open to any applicant 19 years or older, located in New York City. The fellowship will support 2 fellows over the course of eight months and will operate on a hybrid model with scheduled online and in person time.
