From 1 - 11 April 2020, the Abbey Theatre presents Ireland's Call, the explosive one-man play written and performed by John Connors.

John Connors is an artist, activist and advocate. Ireland's Call is his debut play, which premiered with a sell-out run at the 2018 Dublin Fringe Festival, followed by a national and international tour (New York, Paris, Sydney, Melbourne, Liverpool) in 2019. This acclaimed work from John Connors now comes to the National Stage, directed by Jimmy Smallhorne (Taken Down, Darklands).

John Connors said: 'This was a dream of mine. To get onto the stage where so many of our rebel heroes have graced. It's a particular honour to be the first Traveller in history to have their writing on the national stage. Breaking boundaries and paving the way for the next generation is very important to me. I can't wait to give the audience all I got!'

Graham McLaren and Neil Murray, Co-Directors of the Abbey Theatre, said: 'It is our ambition to ensure that the widest variety of compelling stories play out on our stages. John Connors is an extraordinary creative force, an exceptional performer, and one of the leading artistic voices from the Travelling community. This one-man show is electrifying in John's razor-sharp portrayal, and it is our great privilege to present Ireland's Call on the Peacock Stage this April.'

Ireland's Call follows the lives and family histories of three young men as they grow up in Coolock on Dublin's North-side. What shapes them and entices them to a life of crime? Examining issues of class, religion and identity, Ireland's Call is an unflinching exploration of the Irish psyche, bringing our collective guilt, secrets and flaws to the surface.

The story takes in three generations of James's family. "Fifty years in an hour!" It covers the heroin epidemic from the 1980s on and the emergence of gang culture in Ireland over the past couple of decades.

Ireland's Call is on the Peacock Stage from 1 - 11 April 2020. There will be free-of-charge post-show discussions after every performance.
