Irish National Youth Ballet Invites You To 'Spring Into Dance' Through April 24

By:

Included in this years INYB Spring season, the Junior company will perform Alice In Wonderland, a familiar and much loved story for children and adults alike. Also, a new and exciting version of Hansel and Gretel has been commissioned by Artistic Director Katherine Lewis for the full company. This promises to be a real treat and should not to be missed.

The Irish National Youth ballet nurtures young dancers and gives them the opportunity to work in a semi professional environment. Auditions are held annually to choose 40 of the best dancers who go on to work with teachers, choreographers, professional stage crews and lighting designers.

This very special evening will showcase four pieces performed by dancers aged 9rys-20yrs

- String Serenade uses movements from Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings in a showcase for the senior dancers of the Company. The ballet evokes the spirit of Tchaikovsky's delightful music with its many changes to mood and style. The main theme of Tchaikovsky's work is very popular, as is the wonderfully evocative Waltz movement. String Serenade is choreographed by Kilian O'Callaghan.

- Alice In Wonderland. Join Alice as she chases the White Rabbit into Wonderland and an exciting new adventure! On her journey she gets caught up with the Tweedles, waltzes with The Cheshire Cat and joins the Mad Hatters Tea Party before venturing into the Land of Hearts.
Choreographed by Melissa Harman to the music of Shostakovich for Irish National Youth Ballet's Junior Company, ‘Alice in Wonderland' is sure to delight audiences of all ages.

- Concerto Grosso by renowned international choreographer Charles Czarny, is the third item on the bill. This is an amusing representation of the movements and contortions of sports men and woman and is danced to the accompaniment of the classical strains of Handel.

- Hansel and Gretel. Irish National Youth Ballet's latest creation is a fantasy retelling of the story of the two children lured to a feast in the forest. Our version is crammed with woodland fairies and wicked, wicked witches, a battle of good versus evil. Will the children survive, or will they be roasted into gingerbread, like so many unfortunate children before them? Can the good fairy of the Morning Dew lead their father to their rescue and break the spell cast over their poor mother, which causes her to dance in the darkness with the coven? Lost deep in the forest, can Hansel and Gretel overcome their fear and hunger, and will they ever see the light of day?

The ballet is danced to the beautiful music of Riccardo Drigo, Imperial Russia's last court composer, with delightful costumes by Alison Finn and original choreography by Stephen Brennan (Ballet Ireland).
