EDINBURGH 2026: Review: PATRICK MONAHAN: I'M NOT A TERRORIST - I'M FREDDIE MERCURY, Gilded Balloon Patter House
Teesside’s favourite Irish-Iranian comic returns to Edinburgh with an engaging, wholesome, and funny hour on identity and cultural displacement.

Tucked inside the warm, intimate confines of Gilded Balloon Patter House, Teesside's favorite Irish-Iranian comic Patrick Monahan brings sixteen years of Fringe experience back to Edinburgh. His latest hour, I'm Not a Terrorist, I'm Freddie Mercury, sets out to deconstruct cultural displacement, racial profiling, and his childhood escape from Iran through the lens of pop culture’s ultimate Iranian frontman.
Monahan’s greatest asset remains his irrepressible charm, infectious warmth, and lightning-fast audience rapport. From the moment he takes the stage, he works the room with a wonderfully wholesome, engaging energy that makes him instantly relatable. This generous crowd-building establishes an affectionate trust, giving him room to pivot into weightier autobiographical territory, including childhood memories of being targeted in 1980s Middlesbrough, escaping Ahvaz in a suitcase, and sleeping through the 7/7 bombings before making an infamous appearance on BBC Newsnight.
Yet the hour occasionally struggles with its own velocity. Monahan’s drive to engage with almost every corner of the room can make the performance feel scattered, sacrificing the momentum of his fascinating personal history for extended scenic detours. Furthermore, the Freddie Mercury framework serves more as a warm bookend and closing musical singalong than a fully integrated narrative spine.
When the narrative hits its stride, particularly in a celebratory, multilingual "Under Pressure" finale, the show’s heart shines through with brilliant observational beats and genuine hilarity. Monahan remains a delightfully funny, deeply likeable performer whose magnetic stage presence ensures a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
Patrick Monahan: I'm Not a Terrorist - I'm Freddie Mercury plays at Gilded Balloon Patter House (Dram) until August 30.
