The paintings in this exhibition are composites of digitally printed images, satellite photographs, and participatory painting. On these canvases, we see faces of famous people: Soekarno, Mother Teresa, Marilyn Monroe, Mao Ze-Dong, Michelle Yeoh, and many others. These faces are juxtaposed with images of ravaged earth, taken from a close range or from some distance. Next, are spatters made with mud taken directly from the Lapindo disaster area in Sidoarjo.
In a provocative yet beautiful way, Dipo Andy's paintings speak of the destruction of the earth, brought about by both human actions and natural disasters. They also speak about the roles of these world figures in various campaigns to save the earth, to make earth a better place for mankind. Or maybe, his paintings speak ironically about the lack of government action in saving the environment.
Dipo Andy graduated from ISI Yogyakarta. His paintings have moved towards the pop art realm when he began to re-create famous figures in the field of sports, film, and other art; in addition to creating abstract artworks. He is one of five winners of the 1999 Philip Morris Indonesia Art Awards.
