Growth of a nation is determined by its education. Sriwijaya and Majapahit are known not only as centers of power, but also as centers for education. The rise of Japan in modern times cannot be separated from the Meiji Restoration in 1868, which focused on education reform. During the National Movement era until the 1960s, Indonesian education was adopted as a template for the education system by neighboring countries. However, these days, we tend to hear complaints of the contrary: that Indonesia is lagging behind its neighbors, especially Malaysia and Singapore.

Is there something wrong with our education system today? Rather than improving, Indonesia’s education system and the resultant culture seem to become even more uncertain. A change of government official means a change in curriculum. The students become casualties. In a time of worry and disorientation, education ideas from the National Movement era and the early years of Indonesia—championed by Ki Hajar Dewantara—are highlighted once more.

We invite you to join our discussion with J. Sumardianta and Abdullah Alkaff. J. Sumardianta is a teacher at SMA Kolese de Britto Yogyakarta, who wrote the book Simply Amazing (2009), and edited Tapal Batas: A Journey to Powerful Breakthrough (2011). Meanwhile, Abdullah Alkaff is an Expert Advisor for the Ministry of Education and Culture involved in drafting the 2013 Curriculum.
