Ahmad Wahib is a controversial Indonesian Muslim scholar. His book, Pergolakan Pemikiran Islam: Catatan Harian Ahmad Wahib (1982, Islamic Intellectual Turbulence: the Diaries of Ahmad Wahib) inspired many Muslim youths, while inviting strong criticisms as well. As a Muslim scholar, Wahib advocated tolerance and established basic principles of pluralism in Indonesia. His sparks of wisdom are still relevant to this day, especially in times when conflicts and violences perpetrated in the name of religion have become more frequent. Survey found that there is a high level of youth participation in these acts.
In order to introduce Ahmad Wahib's views, Forum Muda Paramadina has put together the 2012 Ahmad Wahib Competition. It hopes to inspire the youths of today to adopt open and critical religious practices. There are three competition categories: essay, blog, and film. Winners from each category will be announced during the Awards Night of the 2012 Ahmad Wahib Competition. It will also feature performances by Efek Rumah Kaca.
